 Post subject: Clutch Again?

I have been trying to get a hold of McLeod for over a week to get their recommendation on a clutch/Pressure plate for my son's dart. The only Tech person, according to the person I talked to, is the owner and he is only available 2hrs in the morning and 2hrs. in the afternoon! I've got a busy signal every time I have tried for a week!! I can't believe I want to spend money and I can't talk to anyone!!

Does anyone have the part numbers for the clutch and pressure plate used in the Hot Rod build-up? What about a part number on the steel flywheel?? Cost?? Has anyone else used any other manufacturers product's recently.

I know Doug said there was some minor clearance problems, which is Ok if I know that going in. But I did want to ask them about that before I ordered.

It appears customer service is a thing of the past!!! I know you guys will help me out.

Rick,

The advice that the staff at McLeod gave me was to FAX questions to the tech folks as they are almost always swamped on the phone, and they will FAX or mail back. You might just FAX them your requirements for the parts, and ask for prices and availability. I think that whole flywheel/pp/disc from the HRM article will be around $500-600. I hope to get an aluminum flywheel from them at some point so I'll be interested to see how you fare.

I did order a McLeod hydro throwout bearing for my T5 swap, but I got it directly from PAW. Works great.

I'm interested in using a hydraulic TO bearing when I swap to an a833OD this fall. What did you use for your pedal/master cylinder? Did you have any unforeseen problems when using this TO bearing?

Patrick,

I believe you can get the McLeod TOB for the 833 from PAW as well. I used the Wilwood 3/4" bore MC from Summit ($62 I think). I had two small problems. One was that I could not find AN style hard line anywhere around here so I had to stack up some adapter fittings and use regular 3/16" (brake) hard line. You can probably order this line, or you can get it if you're in a big city or have a good parts store/speed shop. If I did it all over again, I might just buy the McLeod kit with the MC included, although I don't know if that includes hard line or not.

The other problem was that it was a sumbich to bleed - took like 45 min of pumping and rebleeding the MC (Wilwood MC has a bleeder on it too) and the TOB in turn. The best way (and the way Matt Haskell did it) is to extend the supplied braided bleeder line up to around the level of the MC, or at least well above the TOB, otherwise it's hard to get the air out of the TOB.

I used the factory '64 Dart clutch pedal with a homemade pushrod to the MC, which I mounted just to the left of and below the brake MC. Used a 5/16" rod end (Heim joint) as the pivot point bolted to the clutch pedal with a 5/16" bolt.

On a lighter note, I installed my new T5 this weekend without even disconnecting the TOB lines. Just pulled the TOB unit off the input retainer while pulling the trans back. Made things pretty simple.

Here is an update from Mcleod for anyone running a 4-speed. After about 11 days I finally got through to their tech line.

The Webber pressure plate that was used in the Hot Rod build-up is going to be obsolete. This is Part # 360752. Price is $135. He told me that he only has 3 left and then there will be no more! This is the unit that has the clearance problems that Doug talked about.There will not be any direct bolt-in Diaphragm type pressure plates available from Mcleod when these are gone.B & B plates are still available.

The Dual Friction material disc is part #260804 and it costs$110.

Steel flywheels are still being made on a custom, as needed basis. The wait on one of these is 2 - 2 1/2 weeks . The cost is between $275-300.
Weight is between 22-24 pounds.

Here is what I did. He said that there is another diaphragm clutch assembly that is almost the exact same size as one for in our slant 6. However it has a slight difference in the mounting hole bolt circle. I think it is out of a Fiero?? He wasn't 100% sure of the part number until he goes to the pressure plates and measure the height of the diaphragm.There were two possibilities and he wasn't sure which one was the match to the slant6 finger height Anyway, as soon as I get mine I will post the numbers for everyone. This pressure plate also has a shorter cover and should not have any interference problems with the Belhousing.

Since I wanted the steel flywheel, he said he would put both the original slant 6 pattern and the new Fiero?? pattern on the flywheel. This will allow a direct bolt in B&B or Diaphrgm type assemly.

Total cost for everything is approx. $550 This did not include the T.O.B. because I have a new one already. I hope this helps some others.
