When I took my pulley/damper off I did not have a retaining bolt to unscrew. My slant six engine book refers to removing a retaining bolt prior to the removal of the damper.

Can anyone tell me if I am supposed to have a retaining bolt to screw to the front of the crankshaft where the damper is located. I cannot see how it would work to hold it in place even if I had one.

Please advise me with my stupid engine bolt question.

Yes, most all Slants had a "press-on" vibration damper. Some real late engines had a bolt.
Nice that all the cranks are tapped with a 3/4-16 thread so you can add a bolt if you want to.
(although I have never had a damper come-off the crank, I have had the outer ring come off the damper's hub, now that makes some noise!)
