 Post subject: slant tranny bolt up

will a 60-67 slant bolt up to my 73 a904 tranny? I'm looking at building a 198 rod stroker engine and I was curious if this block would be ok for that. I know it has a forged crank but I'm not sure if my transmission will work. In the future I would like to find a 4 speed to go on the car, would it be a pain the find one to fit on this motor?

The trouble is that the '67 and earlier slants used (IIRC) a smaller torque convertor flange, so you would need either a '68-'76 forged crank, or a '67 and earlier torque convertor. The four speeds are less trouble - you'll need to be sure to include a pilot bushing or needle bearing assembly, and not all cranks came with them (worst case is you'll need a machine shop to ream it), but that's the only issue.

Hey,
Yup the A-904 will bolt up perfect but if your gonna do the 198/2.2L combo, that 904 aint gonna last long, i have an aluminum case A-833OD and an aluminum Bellhousing along with a 10" clutch and flywheel forsale (the clutch is new only has 1000kms on it) make me an offer if your interested, as for the 904, to make it last you can rebuild it with 727 Guts

You have to be careful here, this can be tricky. I had the opposite problem with a early model tranny to a later model engine. Although the tranny will bolt to the engine, the early engine, (67 and earlier slant 6) had the small crank hole for the torque converter with the small hub. The torque converters are not interchangeable with later year transmissions. If you have the early engine and later transmission you have some choices. Replace the crank with a larger opening. There might be an option of changing the tranny pump and input splines to accept the early model torque converter, but I do not know for sure.

Ohh yeah forgot about that torque converter issue, but newho if you need a 4spd, i have a shifter and i can through in a pilot bushing for you too for free, make me an offer

You can rebuild the 904 with the SB 998 / 999 parts and make a "small" torqueflite that can handle some major H.P. but there is no way you will get 727 parts to fit into a 904 / 998 / 999 case, the 727 parts are much bigger.

If you really need the added "beef" in a SL6 automatic, there is an "RG 727" AT, which is the 727 with a Slant6 bellhousing.

I just finished putting an 833 4 speed in my 65 Valiant last spring. It took a year to find all of the parts and a day to put it in. I LOVE IT! I thought shifting would get old but it's not bad. I even drive in LA traffic. Try and get all of your parts from one donor car that's like yours. My parts come from at least 4 different cars. It ain't pretty but it works fine.

I'm still looking for a 65 floor hump. Let me know if anyone has one. I have a 67+ hump I'll trade. Laysons is going to reproduce them someday. I don't know what I'll do if it ever rains here or the weather gets cold. (Anything below 60 is cold here).

I have a 1965 A 904 G that come out of my car. It's locked up. I don't know how bad the damage is internaly. I hate to send it to the crusher. Free to anyone who will come and get it. I'm moving before the end of the year. It'll be here till then.

Most RG 727s are found in 70 & up Tradesman Vans and SL6 D150 Trucks.

It is a super HD tranny for a SL6 but all the bigger / heavy "guts" soak-up extra HP.

The main issues are the fact that the big converter "nose" will not fit the 60 - 67 small hub SL6 cranks and all RG 727s have the later mechanical shift linkage, bigger speedo gear and slide-in rear driveshaft yoke.
This makes it hard to swap these into the older (60-67) cars, especially the pushbutton shift/ B&T front U-joint vehicles.

Well, truth is that a few parts do swap, mainly the 2nd gear "kick-down band" *lever* and the valve body. All the other parts do not swap over.

You have to think of the A-904 as being similar to a 3/4 to 7/8 scale A-727...similar but still not the same...

I have an 833 and /6 bellhousing,( hurst shifter too) for sale, missing a few small parts, for ball and trunion drive shaft. I'll be at the /6 meet at Alviso this Sunday. $175 takes everything. Also have an aluminum Featherduster one barrel intake ($45) and an aluminum super six intake-the cheesy two piece type-($25). See you at Alviso, Steveo
