I bought an '82 Dodge D150 from a friend that has a slant six and three speed w/overdrive standard. The truck always ran well when he was driving it daily. It sat for a while, so I offered to buy it since I needed a second vehicle. Ever since I picked it up it will not run above about 1500 RPM. It starts to pop and bang out of the carb and tailpipe. I put 92 octane in it figuring the gas was stale maybe, and that might spruce it up. I changed the fuel filter, tried a different carb.,a different coil, a different set of wires, and a new set of plugs. I have no idea what to do next. Anyone have any ideas?

Does this one have the Lean Burn / ESC ignition? Or an older system with vacuum advance?

You'll want to check for serious vacuum leaks between the intake manifold and the cylinder head, check the floor of the intake manifold for cracks, and verify cam and ignition timing carefully, but the spark control computer is a prime suspect with problems like this. It should be eliminated if your local regulations permit it. Start by reading this thread.

So I need to change the distribitor to one with a vacuum advance? I have an MSD ignition box, but will it work with the original distribitor?

You can use the MSD box if you want, but you cannot use the present distributor; you will need a 2-wire (not 4-wire) distributor with a vacuum advance and a single (not dual) pickup.

My brother had a kind of similar problem in his camaro. It just wouldn't run over 30mph or so. He didn't have the popping and banging though. Turned out to be the fuel filter.
