What is the average stall of the stock torque converter?

I've got a 1974 Plymouth Valiant with an A904 behind the 225.

Just trying to get a ball park figure here.

My understanding is that stock stall speed is around 1700 RPM.

I was thinking it was somewhere around there.

Thank You!

Yep, somewhere around 1600-2000. 1800 if I had to pick a number.

They'll go 2400 if ya hit it with a 100 shot.

How 'bout if ya drop a long rod stroker on it? It looks like it's going to be equivalent to perhaps a 70-90 Horse shot.

Will the stocker hold up against that? Perhaps I need to go get that 2000 RPM MP converter just for strength? Or were you playing with me?

I don't want to jump the gun and recommend someone that I havn't test completely yet, but FTI seems to build a quality converter. Don't know how it performs yet, but I saw it built and it had torington bearsing in it, a special no bulge hub, and a new machined back cover. Not a reused stock one as my midwest is.

True dat!

Someday you guys will learn that a good converter behind a box stock motor will do more good than a hopped up motor with a stock converter. Even a 2bbl motor can use a 3000 stall any day of the week. Stock converters are just that. Stock. :?

So is 412.00 reasonable for a TCI converter for my 18 spline 904?

That all depends whats in it. You can buy a Jegs converter for $200, but after the guys at FTI cut it open for a customer, you don't want one.

This is totally true. Ask anyone that runs a stock eliminator car, what made the biggest improvement. It will be convertor and/or rear gears.

My Z/SA 65 Valint with a 101 hp, 170 slant had a 8 inch convertor and 3.91 gears, with a 22.5 inch tall tire. It could run mid 16's in the 1/4 at 2700 lbs race weight.

I'll jump on the wagon here. Converter is well spent money for performance. No substitute if you have an auto.

Improvement is 0.5-1.5 seconds in the 1/4 over a stocker.
