Post subject: Beaten by a BBD
PostPosted: Mon Oct 07, 2002 12:30 pm
I have rebuilt and installed a BBD on my 6. It is from a '75 318. The car idles fine for 20 seconds and then dies. Pouring fuel into the fuel bowl allows the car to start and idle for another 20 seconds.

I diagnose the problem as the float level set incorrectly or the needle jet sticking. The U shaped spring clip that holds the float pin in doesn't do a very good job. It appears to bind the float and it doesn't hold the float level in the bowl. I can not get consisent depth measurement for the floats.

Anybody else experience this problem, or have a solution?

Thanks

Well, figured out the problem myself. After taking the carb apart again, and everything checked out, again. I decided to see if any fuel was actually flowing into the carb. Now fuel was coming thru the filter! Even thou you could see fuel in the filter (clear plastic), none was coming out the other end. My son stuck a brass rod down the fuel line and extracted a dead worm.

Go figure, everything works now...

Good detective work. Whenever you suspect a fuel problem, it's good to disconnect the fuel line and pump some fuel out just to be sure gas is flowing.

Sorry to leave you "hanging" on this question, lot's of action over the last fews days, sometimes it's hard to keep-up.

Hind sight is 20/20. I didn't figure that the fuel wasn't coming out of the filter. I could see it going into the filter and I thought I had rebuilt the carb wrong. This is the first BBD that I have ever rebuilt. So I suspected the new thing, no the old thing.
