 Post subject: Starter problems
PostPosted: Tue Oct 08, 2002 12:08 pm
Hey guys I am working on my wife's 60 Valiant. Its a 3 speed with a newer 225 in it. Problem is that it has the original flywheel!

Which means........yup, the direct drive starter is dead and I am apparently just stone cold out of luck on finding a replacement. I could pay through the nose to have it rebuilt, but it seems to me that the wisest thing to do would be to go ahead and put a newer style ring gear on it instead of rebuilding the obsolete "nope, never heard of that....all mopars use gear reductions" starter.

SO.....anyone have an extra ring gear that they might be willing to sell? Thanks,

Andy in Austin

So there is no confusion, this is a 3 speed manual shift, has a clutch and a flywheel right?

Either way, you are on the right track, swap to the later flywheel or torque converter and you can use the gear reduction starter.

Oops, yup, it is a three speed on the floor! Pretty fun little car. Freshly rebuilt 225, brand new clutch, put it all back together, and a short while later.....DEAD STARTER! Arrrgghgh!

Anyhow - will be nice to be able to put a "mini-starter" on that car. That old thing weighed about as much as the Valiant itself.

Anyhow - if anyone knows where I could get a ring gear - maybe I could even use the same flywheel and just change out the ring gear?

Any good machine shop should be able to get you the standard ring gear for about $35, as I just bought one for my '64, but I have no idea whether it will fit your flywheel - likely yes?

Was this direct drive starter the same as the ones used on the '66-'69 4spd hemi cars? If so, I saw a new product notice about a year ago that Accel was releasing new and improved version.

You know, I did come across the fact that the hemi was another mopar flywheel that used the direct drive. But still - never saw those for sale anywhere either.

I don't know - I am skeptical that they are the same for the reason that I suspect the flywheels of a 3 speed (originally 170 slant) and a 4 speed hemi have got to pretty different. Course they might have the same teeth spacing, and I guess that is all that really matters. Just don't know, but thanks for the input all the same Cecil.
