Doc is a pretty cool guy. My first year in Vegas at MATS, I had my Duster painted for about 20 days and was going to see what the slant could do or I couldn't afford a v8 can't remember(ha). I walked up to Doug and started talking about sixes, I said I had read some pretty good stuff by a guy name Dutra. He chuckled and said "well that guys pretty good with this stuff". Had no idea who I was talking to, just some Doug guy. To wrap things up he's a pretty alright guy, and I felt pretty humbled.
Post a video of this bad boy!

Well, it may have taken me 8 hours to get down to Mark's shop but it only took me 6 hours to get back home! (Damn 405 was a "parking lot" on the way down there)

Usually I don't make 400 mile house calls but this project is "special".
I alway worry about getting lost in big cities like LA / Long Beach but hey, how many Guzzi shops can there be down there?
I have to say, the place was easy to find:

So, we crammed a 1000 lbs of race SL6 engine, auto trans and parts into the ol' 66 Dart wagon, checked the oil / tire pressure and hit the road Saturday morning.
Oh... a few days earlier, I also swapped out the 3.23 gear for a 3.07 set I have been working on... just to see how they feel on the open road. I like that ratio for the highway.

OK readers... the speedo in the 66 Dart broke a few weeks back so this trip was done "speedoless"... the Dart does have a tach.
I found a "sweet spot" right at 3000 RPM and saw 3600 a few times.
The rear tire measures 25.5 inches tall and the car has a lock-up torque converter. As already noted the gear ratio is 3.07
So how fast was I driving?

I need to run a mapquest to see exactly how many miles were travelled, I used 37 gallons of fuel total so the "rough" mpg is 21... not bad for 4500+ lbs rolling down the road at 70+ (??) mph.

I will post engine install info. and photos on the "twins" thread but here is a "teaser" shot.

Doug ran 74 MPH at 3k RPM and 89 MPH at 3600.

Today I went 440 miles round trip to get a 3.21 geared 8 1/4. I averaged 23.5 MPG cruising about 60-65 MPH going East and 70-75 going back West. This in my 2.5 Jeep powered Dakota.

Thanks for doing the MPH math for me Josh... that is about what it felt like, speed wise.
I have to get that speedo fixed before towing to Vegas and it looks like I better switch the car's gear back to 3.23 if I want to stay in that 3000 RPM sweet spot while towing!

Sounds like a fun trip/thrash.

The trip in my 64 Dart to CA had no speedo either. We cruised 2800-3400 RPM with 3.91 gears, 24.5" tires, and 0.63 OD. Had a few 3800-4000 blasts 8)

3800-3900 in top gear was my fastest speed at Willow.
