Hey Folks,

Update on Richmond yesterday:

Rain held off racing until about 1 pm, but we had nice weather for the afternoon/evening of action. 7 cars showed up, but only 5 raced due to nervousness about newly installed parts (we know who we are). The field was Charles Myers, Ron Hamby, Leighton Drake, Gordie Stevens, and Rodney Hargis. Practice runs were limited to two (for some unknown reason), even though there weren't that many race cars there total.

Seymour drove from MN (1200 mi.) in his Valiant, but a dicey alternator kept him from running.

We talked to several new Slanters who have followed the sites and Racing News - Dan, and Sam and others - welcome.

Ron Hamby did an impressive 1st pass ever on N2O to net a 11.47 @ 112 MPH. Held the throttle down at the big end turning 7100 RPM and no damage. He ran 12.75-12.80 before and after on the motor, so big gains there and a nice setup. Kay Hamby was crowned the Queen of Nitrous after some skilled pit crew work before the N20 pass.

Charles did a wild and woolly first pass with lots of drifting and lifting and a 10.51. He got the suspension/launch sorted out on the first round of elims and ran a 10.31 with smoke from the 100 ft mark on out (blown head gasket). My money was on a 9 sec pass if it had held together.

Gordie got the bye 1st round and was running consistent 14.30s all day. I was impressed with the simplicity and consistency of Gordie's car, so his reputation is well earned.

Leighton's ride ran well, and looked and sounded great, of course, but couldn't hook up. By the end, they figured out it had broken the passenger side (Strange!) axle and was only using one tire for traction. 11s-low12s is great for only one tire. 10s are definitely on the horizon once the traction demons are appeased. Charles took the win in the first round duel between them, but had gasket wire in his combustion chamber so was out for the day.

Rodney was dead on all day and ran 12.75-77, I believe. 12.75 is his fastest run yet, so he's having solid progress on that Lancer. He confided after the race that he had not lost a 1st round all year, and only one second round. Ron and Rodney went in the 1st round and Ron bulbed and then his tranny missed slipped going into 2nd to give Rodney the win.

Gordie and Rodney lined up in the final and Rodney took it with a 12.75 on a 12.75 (not sure if Rodney got him on the tree or if Gordie broke out?) Either way, Great job on the 2nd place points win, Rodney!

Ron Hamby received the Points trophy from Gordie Stevens with much fanfare. Afterwards, Ron was approached by a girl of 12 for an autograph in a Mopar Collector's Guide! International notoriety is sure to follow for the Hamby clan.

Cheers,
Lou Madsen

Tom Jr and I went out today. Had a great time. Gordie Stevens was the only /6'er still there (to the best of my knowledge). He "hooked-up" his 4 bbl and was turning 14.03's like clockwork. He gave everyone quite a show, breaking-out in the final with a 14.027 on a 14.03 dial-in. We spoke to him after the race. What a nice guy! I've already emailed what pictures I took to the site address. Hopefully, we'll be running this time next year. Sorry we didn't come out yesterday. I would have liked to have met the rest of the /6'ers.

Ahhhh yes, when the car runs great, the driver gets all the credit, when something goes wrong, it's the crew's fault!

In my case, if I fire the crew chief there would be no one left to drive the car! ; - )

Hey Mike, did you get the info. I mailed you on that Las Vegas race? Looks interesting, what do you think??

I ran two 9:36's, a 9:37 and 2 9:40's yesterday at RT66. Too bad it was only 1/8th mile though. I really wanted to drop some 14 second passes on my Sportman buddies, but they cut back to 1/8th mile so the fast cars wouldn't get loose and crash at the big end. I went 3 rounds and had to leave last every run. 2 Chevy trucks and a 5.0 Mustang. Gave away .03 on the tree to a Blazer, and that was the end of my day. Later! Dennis
