 Post subject: Pickups with car 4spds.

I Just bought a new Hurst shifter#3916789 for my 78 dodge pickup I installed a833 4spd out of a 63 signet ayear ago I have a bench seat,lowered by removeing the mounts and slides. The stick provided works perfect I can discribe details if interested. Bruce.

Bruce - nice work.

Doug - cool article. On quick scan I didn't see Mike Andreas' (with Wildcat motors help) fix for putting an early 833 into a 5.125" bh using a factory 3spd bearing retainer. Might want to get that in there too.

I got a bearing retianer from Wildcat MOPARs that fits the "3.7 bolt circle on the transmission and the "5.125 ID of the aluminum bell housing. Dennis said it came off of a MOPAR 3-speed. I've been driving it for 6 months now and it's GREAT!

HELP! I'm still looking for a 65 floor hump. I have one for a 67+. I'd really like to have the right one. Someone's bound to have one or know where one is. I'll trade, whatever. I also have a set of clutch brake pedals I'd trade.

hey Mike, whats the clutch loaded to in pounds and the back side of that disk, half ceramic? also whats the weight differace between the cast bellhousing and the aluminum one? and which one do you belive would provide better containment in the event of an explosion? I'm thinking because cast iron is harder it may shatter,but I just don't know. on the lighter side does that stick I sent you still match my truck or did you get that yellow paint off. Bruce

Wow. I forgot where that came from. I've got parts from all over the country. I stripped it. It sure could use a rechrome but it rows the boat. The clutch, bellhousing and flywheel are from the "Slant Sickness" Hot rod mag article. I have to confess. I'm a scavanger. I don't remember too many of the spacifics. I just know it works great. My next project is a complete 833 teardown and rebuild. I can't wait. I'm thinking about rebuilding an early 833 and stuffing the guts in an aluminum case.

As for the bellhousings, I'll bet the iron one would hold in an explosion better. I used the aluminum one because I knew that all of the parts had worked together. There were some clearance problems that were worked out before I got the parts. Doug Dutra was in on that I think.

First 122tooth fly wheel a.High mount starter/ increased header selection b.Safer cluch size, used 10" Borg and Beck loaded to 2600lbs by Ott's of portland (less $ than standard parts store rebuild).Second, Cross member mods, Relocation 4" forward some cutting to clear transmision and some to clear speedometer cable, no renforcement to replace cuts, member appeared still several times stronger than car member.Third, ball and trunion joint replacement useing the U joint off the trucks old top loader,A435? Next a new clutch fork needs to be made useing a section of the outer truck fork and the inner section of the car fork.This I found makes a good long lever good for the heavy clutch and well within range of peddle travel use the stock truck ajuster, no other mods needed. Fifth. I lowered the bench seat by removeing the ajusters and mounts, rear corners bolt to the floor the front rail rests on the the hump with new supports on the front corners, the seat back was relocated to nest in the recess below the window where a bar was installed to mount attachments for 5point harnesses....AUTOMAKERS! airbags are expensive and stupid!! I look forward to seeing more nice and light vintage DODGE trucks on the road. Enjoy, Bruce

Yes, there was some grinding done on that Pressure plate to get it to fit.

Doug,

Mike A. gave you all the info above on the bearing retainer that I know. Thanks for saving me from searching, Mike!

My T5 is working great now. Still have about 200 miles to go on breakin before I really start hard shifting. Gonna swap in the 3.91s this weekend too.
