I narrowed my Explorer axle 2.875" and need 1"spacers to run 17x8 Mustang wheels (Lou gave me a bent one to try) My rear axle is now the same width as a stock 7.25 with 10"drum brakes.

So....a stock Exploder axle is 2.875 wider than a stock 7.25

......so 2.875- 2"= .875 too wide....or 7 /16 of an inch too wide on each side.

no more
The 7/16" per side doesn't seem like it would work. Looks even worse when I add to the fact that the tire is about 3/8" wider as well, so overall the outside of the tire would be about 13/16" farther towards the outside of the car. Don't think that would work.

Some of this is based on the fact that the difference I calculate between the mounting flange on the wheel to the inside of the tire between the cop wheel and the 17x8 Mustang wheel is 1". So, your 1" spacer makes perfect sense.

Did the wheels you tried have tires on them? If so, how did they look in relation to the fender lip and outside of the wheel well?

ok i just got my rearend for my 8.8" swap..

this was eyeballing in the dark pretty much, but should be close :)

87-93 mustang drum brake rearend, bone stock, drum to drum is 59.5

stock 7.25" 5 lug rear measured an even 60" drum to drum

so an 87-93 mustang drum rearend should work perfect for you i would think..

i can double check lengths for you if you want me too..

Yeah, 235/60-15 fits fine with cop car wheels and a standard rear end. I ran that back in 1996.
Any issues with rubbing?
The only rubbing I would get was going into or out of steep driveways at an angle. It would push one rear tire up and the other would drop so the inside of the rear tire would rub on the inside wheel well. It made a crescent shaped shiny spot a few inches long. Never hurt the tire at all.

Wow, I measured my 7 1/4 at 56.5" drum-to-drum.

Hey Lou, any idea what width rear axle you are running on Project V?

edit - never mind, I found it.

71 Maverick width is 56.5", plus 2" of spacers equals a total of 58.5" wide.

Hey, that confirms that a 58.5" (or so) width works.

Also, tripped across the info that a Granada rear is 58.5" wide.

More to think about.

The wheel I tried was a stock Mustang 17x8 with a tire on it...(its buried in snow right now) It would fit nicely with 1"spacers...front or rear.

What are you doing on the front if you wont run spacers?

The Granada rear end I have is only 57 1/2" maybe 57 5/8".

Run them on the stock brake rotor hubs. It's already been proven you can run them on A-Body rotors, only issue is the tie rod end. Some hit, some don't.

I didn't confirm the numbers, found it here when I was looking for the Maverick axle width.

Maybe it's for a 9" and you have an 8", or the other way around?

Check the ratio on Granada/Monarch rear ends. My son's had a 2.47 gearset.

I will check my width. Must be close to 58" with discs, but don't know exactly.

Hey Sandy, that wheel shouldn't have been bent! It's a good wheel as far as I know. It made some passes around VIR with no troubles anyway. I have more for you if you're interested...

Lou

OOps....for whatveraddled reason I thought it was bent. (mebbe I just told CSB it was when I crost the border)

I would love more ....I cant find good tires for my beloved Ansens (14")

Could you fax the other 3 over?

My car sat in the driveway with the one 17"on it (just mocked up) and everybody thought they were cool. It does need the 1" spacers on the rear to work.

Sandy, FAX is on the way. Let's try to work out transport through the Slant network.

My Maverick axle was 56-56.25" (I think the latter), from drum-drum. The Granada axle in there is close to 58".

Lou

With rotors, or without?

Thanks for the info!

The 245s have been fine with not-quite-perfect centering and only hit mildly at max cornering forces.

Lou
Where did it hit under max cornering forces? Spring or wheel well?

How much room do you have between your leaf springs and tires?

Thanks!
