This is my first post on the new board here, but I'm a regular on the .com site, so many of you might already know me. Here's my question:

I plan on building up either a 170 or 225 long rod conversion motor with EFI and dual Dutra Duals and dual exhaust all the way back, with X pipe. The cam will not be very strident, because I want good fuel economy and smooth idle. I will also be going with about a 9:1 CR because I want to be able to use 87 octane.

Is 180 HP at the rear wheels possible with such a build? Is 24 MPG with 50/50 city/hwy possible with this buildup and an automatic overdrive transmission?

Thanks!

Oops, I'm not quite finished.

Should I choose a 170 or the 225 long rod?

What cam should I use?

What stall converter should I use with that cam?

I will be running about a 3.21 geared 8.25" rear.

Hey,
Glad to see you're exploring your slanted options and joining us here at this wicked new board...

Well, the main thing is: do you want a high revvin monster or a daily driver type deal? Both engines make the same power but at different RPM's. I'm thinking of building a 170 when I can but I need to find out more info as well. I'd go with the MP "17" second cam b/c it's still very mild and about a 2000 - 2500 stall, shave the head and do some other odds and ends such as boring...

Justin

I would encourage you to go with a 5spd or 4spd instead of auto OD if you want these numbers, although it may be possible with the A500. the stick is much lighter and easier to install, and more efficient. :)

I'd run something like Dennis' Racer Brown cam (228 @ 0.050"?) or the Isky 264 in a long-rod motor, or just a regular 225 with milled head/block to get 9.5:1 comp. If you get the spark advance curve right, it will not ping. Spending time on the advance curve can get you a lot of mileage too.

Happy building,

Lou
