I was curious about how many of you have a 4 speed behind your slant? I'm asking because I want to eventually do the swap, so I'm wondering what all of you guys did out there? I have a 66 slant that I am putting in my 73 duster and I'm trying to gather parts for a future transplant. So far I think I need:

• 1) torque converter adapter for later tranny (if I do infact find a tranny that is younger then my 66 /
  2) I think I need a bell housing, unless I can use my A904 one.
  3) transmission ?A833? or what other model would work without a lot of hassle?
  4) correct flywheel/flexplate
  5) floor shifter parts

I'm sure I'm missing things or adding incorrect things but that's why I'm here I guess my plan is to hit the boneyards to see if I can find an auto tranny with all the parts so I can just get everything from one car, but what model trans should I keep an eye out for? Will I need to make any drive shaft mods at all if I do do the swap?

If I read you right, you are trying to put a 4spd manual in your '73 with a '66 engine. It would be best to find a 4spd Slant6 donor car, or all the parts from one. If you get a '67-down, it will have the right flywheel, otherwise you'll need an adapter to fit the smaller centering ring on your crank hub. You need - bellhousing to fit transmission, A833 trans or A833 OD trans, shifter, pedal assy and clutch linkages, clutch (p. plate, throwout bearing, disc), flywheel to fit crank hub, floor hump to clear shifter. Any 4spd Dart/Valiant is good to find, or 4spd Volare/Diplomat/Aspen, either with a Slant6 since the Slant takes its own bellhousing.

They are essentially the same trans, but with different ratios. The regular 833 commonly had ratios of 3.09 or 2.66 (1st) through 1:1 (4th). The 833OD used 3.09 (1st), 1.67 (2nd), 1 (3rd) and 0.73 (4th). So the OD is just a wide-ratio 4spd, or you can think of it as a normal 3spd with an OD 4th gear. For economy, the OD is probably better, but it's not the best for performance/racing because the RPM drops between gears (esp 1st and 2nd) are so large.

if you need i have a spare aluminum belhousing and manual clutch fork along with a 10" clutch pressure plate and bearing that i'd let go for almost nothing the clutch has less than 1500 easy going miles on it, but this is only if you go the OD route, i may have a aluminum OD tranny and shifter for sale if i can grab a good non-OD for my setup...

After lurking for awhile I decided to finaly register and post something!

I found my /6 OD4spd in a '79 Dodge van. Got the whole running thing real cheap too.

Somthing to think about if your looking for the whole engine/trans thing.

On the for sale part of this board "oldmopars" is wanting to change a
four speed Duster to automatic. You might want to talk to him. He would
have all the stuff you need. Good Luck!

Just something to keep in mind! The Van and Pick-up A833OD tranny is over three inches longer than the A-body tranny which will require the drive shaft to be shortened. Also, the shifter mounting pads are in the wrong location for an A-body so some custom fabricating for the shifter mounting bracket is going to be required.
