On occasion I'll watch Barrett-Jackson and many times they show a camera shot from underneath the car as the drive shaft is turning. My drive shaft is out of the car right now, and I want to give it that same new look on the auction site. I bought some croaker cloth (spelling?) and plan to sand the drive shaft down to remove the surface rust. How did the factory originally paint the drive shaft? (Flat black or what)

Most driveshafts were not painted from the factory. I would buy some "steel" colored paint.

@ a couple of the "low rider" car shows i have seen what looked like a chromed plated drive shaft. prolly chrome painted but very attractive .also they put mirrors under the cars to show them off.

in reality these are prolly not everyday drivers, but closed trailered show cars. but damn it certinly looks cool!

btw: my drive shaft looks flat black .... hmmm

I looked at Alsa paints for some of the more exotic finishes. Pretty cool, but I'm racing a hooptie after all. Maybe a nice Cammo driveshaft!
That Way the mud won't show. I know you can't see dirt on the rest of the car.

When I had a driveshaft made for my Nova, the company painted it gray. It might have been an attempt to look original, but I don't know. It looks good though.

I have watched two drive shafts being made and balanced for my cars. When everything was finished, with the shaft still spinning on the balance machine, he sanded the shaft, and then sprayed it with flat grey laquer paint from a spray can, all while it was still spinning. It took maybe 3 minutes. Three minutes later the laquer was dry, and I took it home. Total cost to make the shaft:$150, at the local truck repair shop. All I supplied was the rear universal collar from the old shaft.

Thanks Sam. I sanded the shaft really well and applied the gray lacquer paint. I looked at it for a couple days, and decided to repaint it a gloss black lacquer. It really looks good now. Total cost: one can of Duplicolor spray paint.
