Hey guys new to the forums havent been on since the other big /6 site had its forums removed... anyways thanks in advance for your help, heres my problem...

about 1 or 2 winters ago a seal (i think) broke on in my tansmission during the winter, i suspect because of freezing of water or condensation inside the tranny. it lost about maybe a cup? of fluid i havent run the car since becasue of a dead battery, when i cheked all the fluid levels yesterday it looked to be just fine but as i said the car wasnt on so it might be inaccurate, other than that the car SHOULD start and run just fine but i have no rear brakes because i am in the process of changing the lines, and also the motor will turn by hand just fine as it was turned every few weeks by hand to make sure it didnt seize...

can anyone shed some light on what could have happened? and how do i fix it :?:

PS. I am only 16 and this is my first car and other than a moderate mechanical knowledge I don't have alot of experience with trannys...

thanx

You need to check your tranny fluid at operating temp. in neutral, on a level surface. At that point hopefully you can see what end the leak is coming from.

wehn i first noticed it it was coming form the front end of the tranny, btu as i said before when i cheked the fluid a couple of days ago it was high, but i am sure that is because it was not running, i remember reading somewhere you need to test it running in nuetral, but my rpoblem is that i dont want to start it and damage something, but at the same time not put in too much extra tranny fluid

I wouldn't worry about damaging anything by just starting the engine. These transmissions are pretty tough. As long as you're not doing any mud bogging or racing you should be fine. Of course if it is your input shaft seal then you will need to drop the tranny out to replace it. And while you're at it, throw a filter kit in and adjust your bands.

Thats alot of work eh? what caused this leak was it condensation freezing (it gets to about -35* here at nights in the winter)? anyways thank you, and as i recall somewhere i read that when some /6s were taken over seas by the army or something they had to be destroyed for fear of lawsuit or something, and they took out all oil, coolant and tranny fluid and put the cars on bricks with a full tank of gas but the cars wouldnt die until about 5 tanks of gas went through them...

The seals can just dry out from sitting. It's not a big job if you have the right tools but on your back in a gravel driveway can be a bitch.

Hey I just noticed you're from K town. Good to see another B.C. guy on the board.

Just noticed your from Nelson, I have friends there and some realatives in Grand Forks not too far, and yeah the main problem is that my dad used to build racing transmissions, but for Fords and has since been injured at work and is now premenantly disabled, his hip was replaced when he was 46 2 yrs ago, so he can kinda tell me what to do in a general Ford vs. Mopar idea, but cant pgysically see or help that much other than the odd time... also Nice to meet you Pat.

Yeah, the tranny isn't a huge repair. I had to rebuilt an a500 for my first truck about a month before I was 16. I know how you feel though, dad was a policeman and got hurt on the job. Got in a scuffle with a drunk hitting his wife I believe, anyways, his back is gone and he doesn't get around very good anymore. The more important thing is you got a cool car and a good group of guys to help.
You need to check the fluid though with it running. I wouldn't worry about blowing it up with just the engine running and the tranny in nuetral. The old girlfriend ran here truck for a couple days on low fluid untill it wouldn't shift. Also, if you got to take it out, I made a simple tranny jack that slipped into my normal floor jack out of metal and some welding.

why do you say the tarns is bad? wont go into gear? a trans low on fluid usualy will not shift before damage comes in. unless your towing and gettin it warm. i would warm it up and shift it through the gears(slowly-R-1,2,3, N-1,2,3, D-1,2,3) and check fluid

tranny isnt bad i just thought it might get damaged if i turned the motor on... the motor still turns over with it in park by hand, and it shifts fine with the motor off, but that was last year that i shifted it with the motor off... i just want it to run properly, do i have to worry about anythign more than replacing a gasket if it starts leaking again? and if it doesnt leak should i just fill it to operating range and leave it be?

I was just thinking (smell the wood burning? ). It might be that the fluid drained out of the torque converter, while the car was sitting. This would over fill the trans pan, and could possibly leak from the dipstick tube, the selecter shaft seal, or the pan gasket. I would start the engine, select each gear, and then check the fluid. If it shows on the dipstick (with the engine running), let the trans warm up, and recheck level, add as required. Then see if you still have a leak.
