I have a 4 speed out of a early 70's chevy truck. It kinda looks like an 833, but I cant find 833 or a NP logo on it anywhere. It looks like the shifter is in exactly the right spot for an A body. Anybody know where to look for meaningful numbers on this gm thing? Can I mix parts like the tailshaft and housing from this on to an 833OD from a truck?

The only standard boxes in early 70s Chev trucks were the NP 435 or the Muncie or Saginaw 3 speeds.

Im not quite sure about that, Sandy, I do remember reading in more than 1 place that they did use a version of the 833 OD in the 80s... being that Chevy trucks used the same body from 73-87 (91 in 1 ton, also Suburban and K5 Blazer) that truck might be newer than he thinks, or that trans swapped in afterwards. But I do not know what splines they put in either end of their version as compared to Mopar. Come to think of it I have a buddy with an 86 Chevy shortbed with a 305 and a 4 speed, 4th being OD. I might have to have a look under it next time I see him. Oh and Sandy; I have noticed your sig for a while now; Neil Young fan, huh?

I know a guy had a Chevy diesel (6.2 I think) and it had an A833.

Could be a US thing.....

I drove my Vortec EFI 73 Sub today....own a 76 ,an 80 and an 89. ....so Im not unfamiliar with them. All the diesels here are autos.....

All 4 speeds I have ever seen are NP 435s or 425s.

I have heard of but don't think I have ever seen an NP 425. I know Ive done clutch jobs on trucks with 435s and whats the other granny low GM 4 speed... SM 465 or something like that? Both the 76 and the 82 1 ton road service tire trucks at my old job had this one in there..... I think the 833s were only used in the lightest duty of "light" full sized trucks. What you said about what trannys came in early 70s trucks you might be right, Sandy. I was thinking maybe real late 70s more into the 80s.But as I said Chevy used the same truck for how many years with basically just grille changes. Yes I know that 73-80 and 81-87 were slightly different but were splitting hairs there :shrug: 8) :lol:

They came in 81-87 light duty trucks. Nobody here ever ordered a light duty truck....so I get why I have never seen one.

All the 2 wheel drive 1/2 trucks came as a 3 on the tree or an auto around here.
Thats about 10 % of the market.

50% of the market was 3/4 or 1 ton 4x4 crewcabs......still is.

People give me 4 bolt main 350s and TH400s .......

I've got an old magazine article out of "Classic Trucks" or something like that, that talks about putting an A-833OD into your classic hauler...

...In another issue of the same publication, there is article suggesting the use of the Aspen/Volare front sub-frame in your classic hauler

I've seen them in other applications, the first thing the Chevy guy does is get the hacksaw or cutoff wheel out and take the nose off the input shaft...

I put a Volare clip in a 66 D100......not recommended. Too much work for too little result.

I also put a 75 Satellite clip in my 51 DeSoto....a much better swap.

Thanks for the link Sandy. I know the truck it came out of was an early 70's, but thinking back I doubt it was original in the truck. I am 99% sure it is a non-od trans, as it doesn't have the upside down 3-4 shift lever. The shifter pad looks like it is in the right spot for an A body. I guess I need to pull it out of storage and put it next to the 833OD on the garage floor and see what it all looks like. Hopefully I can build one box that will fit without major hassles.

I am positive it is not a NP435, NP425, SM465, or a GM465 as I have built more of those then I can count. When I worked in the truck shop those were the smallest transmissions we built.

I got my 833OD BEFORE reading the 4-spd article, and of course it came from a truck, so it has the B body shifter mount.

Seems like the story of my life is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken scratch.

One guy on Moparts recently mentioned using a long shaft 833OD in his Gen II Cuda.

there was a guy on the other /6 site (Dave something or other?) that had a 68 Cuda with a long tail one in it too.

I figured out that the GM trans is not an 833, I guess it is a saginaw. I put it back togeather with my original 3spd, 250?? I know it is a non-syncro first gear and it is date coded Jan 63. Getting rid of the non-syncro first was my main goal, but I have to do some fab to fit the 833OD so that is going to be a later project. I thought it would be easier since I had the car all apart for the engine swap, but it is going to take more time then I have right now. I did take all the measurements I should need.

My 833OD is out of a truck and it looks like it uses the B body shifter location. I will have to fab a plate to mount the shifter, fab a bracket to reinforce the bracket to the tail housing and drill and tap the E body shifter location to mount the plate to. I will probably have to grind most of the B body shifter mount off. I will also need to cut and leighten all the shifter linkages. I think a Volare 4dr driveshaft might fit, it looked really close in the mock up.

I will post about the whole engine swap saga soon.
