I recently dropped my steering column in my 73 Dart to do some work. I did it just like the FSM tells you to, and let it rest on the driver seat.

I put it all back together like it came apart but started having some problems. Sometimes the car wouldn't crank when I hit the key. Weird. Then sometimes when I put the car in PARK it would start to roll away on me!

I finally noticed that the gear shift indicator area on the steering column (PRND12) was slightly canted to the right (clockwise) just a bit. So the no start was a neutral safety issue, and the rolling away was a not quite in PARK issue.

I have tried fixing it by loosening everything back up under the column and at the fire wall, but I can't seem to rotate the column back to the left, the little bit that it needs.

Has anyone else ever run into this?

Do I have to shim the cloumn to the left at the bolts where it attaches to the dash?

Thanks for any insight!

Chris E.

You should be able to leave the column bolted up and just adjust the shift linkage. There should be an adjustment on the trans linkage. :D

Correct me if I am wrong here, but if the part of the steering column which includes the gear shift indicator window is canted, I can't see how adjusting the linkage would correct that.

I would think the column would have to move as a unit.

No?

Thanks,

Chris E.
