I need to remove the oil pan on my '64 Valiant to replace both the rear main oil seal and oil pan gasket, due to excessive oil loss.

I note that the Z-bar linkage is bolted to both the side of the transmission/engine and the inner side of the fender well. I assume I need to unbolt the Z-bar at the three bolts located behind the front left tire (?).

Also, I know I need to jack up the engine a couple of inches to remove the oil pan, but it seems that all the good jacking points are located at the places where the oil pan bolts to the bottom of the engine block. What is the hot tip to jack up the engine so that you can access the oil pan bolts?

IMO it is easier to pull the engine and do it on the bench.

Not too many years back I caught a 1964 Valiant in a rural junkyard, decided to pull the clutch pedal set, and wanted to grab the oil pan for a .com member... let's just say, it was easier after the yard owner got the fork lift and pulled the engine and tranny out for me...

Thanks for the prompt replies, albeit it's not what I wanted to hear!

When I first started playing with slants, I pulled the oil pan in the car a couple of times (65 Valiant). With all the hassels, I decieded it is easier to pull the engine. If you have to drop the pan, without pulling the engine, don't jack the engine up. Lift the engine from the top, by using a hoist, or a "support bar" across the inner fenders.

As a genuwine southern guy with redneck genes...I have a stout chain between two trees, and a hoist hung on. It looks soooo modern to have a hood up, a car on stands, and an engine hanging from between two trees. IN a month or so we add in skeeters too. And cold cans and bad langwidge.
