Pat came pretty close with his number... I would not be surprized to see a higher number unit still in service but we will see.

I checked 3 Alm. blocks I had "handy", the one in my 65 Dart convert is number 33,307

Twiggy is #46,944 and I have a "basket case" block on the engine stand that is #45,505.

I have a few more stuffed into the shed that I need to check now that Guzzi Mark has layed-down the high number challenge.

The bad news, knowing Mark, he will insist that the challenge is for the highest numbered running Aluminum Block SL6... so if I find a higher number block stuffed into my shed, I will have to rebuild the darn thing! :P

That is the correct # on the block. But at this point I do not know how good the block is. Compression is low (40 to 50 psi) across all cylinders. Also the head on this engine does not have the cast in star between the rocker arm cover and the intake and exhaust mating surface as my 62 has. Not original head?

I had five aluminum blocks when I lived in Denver. Now I'm down to two. One of the ones I kept is a late-production ('63) item. I didn't particularly need to look at their serial numbers before, but now that there's $1K being waved around...

...I find I still don't particularly need to look at their serial numbers.

The first batch of cylinder heads for the aluminum-block engine had the word "SPECIAL" on the casting ID pad instead of the casting number 2206035 like the regular heads had. The difference was a slightly smaller combustion chamber and some clearance for the pushrods. The second batch had the same mods but a 5-pointed star on the casting ID pad. The final batch looked just like the "regular" head (w/2206035 on the pad) because the two head versions were commonised to just one. This was possible because the aluminum-block head was compatible with the iron engine, but not the other way round.
