What kind of mileage are you getting with this build?
What rear end ratio do you have?

You mentioned it is good from 700 to 3500 rpm, what happens after that?
Just curious if you have super low rear end gears.

My build will hit 90 mph (4000 rpm) in a heart beat when cruising at 60 mph with a 2.76 rear end ratio. It is great for passing.

Um... the engine keeps going after 3500 rpm, it just seems like your power is going into keeping the engine spinning not propelling the car. In first gear I can turn 4800rpm in a heartbeat, but from there on i tend to shift earlier and earlier. I installed 3.73 in the back with the Ford 8.8 and they work nice. Gas mileage isn't exactly accurate yet as I keep monkeying with it to get anysort of accurate reading. I had it down in Corvallis for two weeks and even with the Megasquirt not being tuned quite right, I had a 15:1 stoich and was estimating 22 freeway. The in town seemed like it was quite a drop, but the gears seem to keep it right in the power band, it's easier to punch it than shift down. The down fall is it seemed just as quick with the old gears than to shift - shift with the new ones. By the time I shift twice with the new ones I had only one shift with the 2.76 which was a little nicer. The new gears were planning ahead for more performance or hemi.

One thing I would say about my build is I wish I would've put more proirty in balancing the rotating assembly. I know it's popular for higher end v8's, but after much more learning, it helps keep the engine from fighting itself, and would defintley help with the higher rpms.

I read in a slant six build up article (link below) that both the rear main seal and the crankshaft snout are the same as a big block, so to find a balancer all you need to find is a 440 balancer.
Also, you might check out http://www.performancetrends.com. I haven't used much of their software, but it might be able to help you with gearing and rpms.

That is something Doc had suggested I do, so I had it done. I actually watched the procedure and was amazed how true they got it. It is super smooth aside from the increased compression and will spin up in a heart beat.

The one thing I didn't do, that wish I had done was to add a windage tray or crank scrapper or both. I think it would save the oil and help the mileage a fair amount enough to pay for the parts.

Thanks for the input on balancing. I've heard few ideas about it, and have been putting a lot of effort into planning the next short block to be fully balanced and have strong reconditioned rods.
Good tip about windage also, I'm more used to being able to order a tray from summit for a small block. But I did plan more this next time with the rod polishing and will probably order a crank scraper. How would you go about getting a tray? I don't know about how much difference there is between the two (function wise) other than I can find scrapers it seems like. Also, to my uncles suggestion I might attept a dry sump alternative. We'll just have to see!

I know that Chrysler made a slant six windage tray and hi-po oil pump. I don't know how many of them are around or available, but at least it's been done.
Another simple solution is replacing your oil pump relief spring with a spring from a hemi oil pump. They're supposedly interchangeable, and it will boost oil pressure.
