I'm just getting in to fixing cars so I don't much about anything just yet so please bare with me. Always wanted a dart swinger since we had one when I was little, and now I finally got it, but need some help. I have some photos here... For the carb, I'm just wondering if anyone can tell what model holley it is. I didn't get the part numbers off it, as I think I'm going to replace it. Also if you notice the two hoses under where the fuel line comes in... they have been plugged and run to nothing. I don't know why they would be plugged or what they are for. Can anyone tell me? The other photo I'd like to know what that is exactly, because the wire and what looks like some sort of control arm run to nothing also. Whatever you can tell me about these photos would be great. I'd don't know exactly what the previous owner was doing, but I'd like to take better care of this car than he did.

I have fixed the images in your post so that they display. It doesn't work to link to a flickr view page; you need to right-click the image on that view page, copy the image location, and then link to that location.

The carb shown is a Holley #2280 two-barrel; it looks as if some previous owner swapped on a "Super Six" ('76-'80 factory 2bbl) setup in place of the car's original single-barrel carburetor. That's just the carb's model number, though, not its type number. At least from the outside, it doesn't look trashed or abused and I don't see any missing parts; you ought to be able to rebuild this carburetor with a quality rebuild kit. I can post the Holley 2280 operation and repair manual if you haven't already got access to it. Be careful if you're buying a replacement carb; the "rebuilt" or "remanufactured" ones from the parts store are junk.

Your choke looks kind of crunched. This is going to cause the car to be very difficult to start from cold. You will probably want to install one of the adjustable electric choke kits . There are other tune-up and fix hints and tips, but we don't yet know a lot about your car.

Since you're brand new at this, you'll want to get the three books described in this post as soon as you possibly can.

I have a Standard Hygrade rebuildkit on order, when asking for a kit you can use Holley part number R-7990A for the carb number or if your local auto parts guy has to have a make and mocel of car tell him: 1978 Dodge Aspen with the 318 no A/C...

if you could post the operation and repair manual or tell me where to find one, that would be great. I'm not sure where the two hoses from the bottom of the carb should run to. I was thinking it might have something to do with the charcoal filter as the previous owner only has one hose running from the center of the filter and nothing for the two on the outsides of the filter.

Nuts, I spoke too soon. I have Holley operation and repair manuals for most relevant Holley carbs, but not the 2280. At least not in my office; I'll check at home.

The two hoses you point to are indeed to do with the evaporative emission control system. For best running and driveability (and fuel savings) they should be hooked up properly.

It's a 73 swinger special, but the engine is a '79 super six i believe. Not sure what it was pulled from.

I suppose I am getting into issues for a different forum, but I was wondering if anyone knows if the hoses for the emission control do run straight to the charcoal filter or through something or to another place all together? I'm having issues with stalling and wondering if that might help, or if that would more likely be the need to rebuild the carb and adjust the idle screw. I can start the engine after a few tries, but always stalls unless you are giving it gas, even after running it for awhile.

On my carb I see the number R-8692. Will the 7990A still work with this, because every store I call for a rebuild kit can't even order something for the 8692?

When I ordered the kit for my old 2280 (DI has it now), I told them it was off a 78 Volare with a 318, and they asked that the number stamped on the carb was (the R-####), and that specified what kit it needed. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think there are multiple versions of the 2280, and that R-#### number is used to distinguish between them.

At least thats what I had to do last time I called the Part store.

I just checked, and yes, the R7990A and the R8692 (and R8692A, and R8692AAA) all take the same kit. Walker # 15702B.

thanks very much. I just called up walker and have it on it's way. I appreciate the info. The local parts store here by me wasn't any help at all, but neither were any of the performance shops either.
