most cars built by Chrysler Australia for export (e.g. to South Africa) got the slant-6 or V8.
The first run of the range VH body only came a as ckd from Oz I agree but ALL the the heavy bits were made over here -

We stamped our metalwork mostly over here. The American Valiants Up to were 72 were a mixed batch with the Charger aka dart demon being imported ckd same goes for the Barracuda but the VIP and Regal - aka Dodge Dart being stamped over here

We never had Australian 60's pre VH shells over here - and the VH only came along in end 73

Now how do I know all this? Talked to a local Chrysler development engineer.

When Chrysler left RSA they buried all the remaining tooling and spares in a ditch and poured concrete over it I am waiting for the list but this included some 426 hemis - special dvelopment turbo slant sixes even ausie hemis!!! and a MOUNTAIN of trim spares

Oh yes - we NEVER had V8 valiants over here only slants

Quote:

No. The slant-6 was used in RHD vehicles from 1960 clear on up through at least the mid-1970s
The CL Regal SE we got over here was a slant with a 4BBl Carter AFB

Production started in 78 and ran until 80 with the last cars sold in 81

Hi Dan did they stop the slant all together over there with the VF series?

My books does not refer to a slant after the VF The 215 Took the place of the slant in the line up - but the VH and CxC fastbodies were all Hemi and V8 - 318 340 and 360

All things equal they will eat a slant.
How can all things be equal when you start with 40 more cubic inches? :?
They do make a 215 Hemi ya know..
Yes and it was on par with the slant cept it had a lower CR less torque and less hp.

Tested Docs 260 version in DynoSim VERY High torque not so HP

Gave it the same cam and induction as e49 version

322ftlb@4000

272hp at 5000

This software is quite conservative

But if you give it a BIG (1000cfm) 4bbl instead of the 3 Webers

288hp @ 5500

309ftlb @ 4000

If you ditch the mufflers on the free flow system

as per Bathhurst racing

299 hp

and

316 ft lb

and this is with a head without big valves, but extensively ported.

Simulation but intrigueing as this slant still has a 5 cid shortage..

So with the 1.74 1.44 valves

321ftlb at 4500

and...............

307 at 5500

so if ever the slant had been developed to the level and CID of the 265 Hemi

all things being equal then the slant and the hemi would be equal ish..... I created a hemi six with the same setup and it develops 12 HP more and 11ftlb more

BUT if the 4 bearing crank would live as long as the 7 Bearing hemi unit is another matter all together

Also it is interesting to note that the long stroke slant prefer a plenum to make power

Slant or Hemi each is unique and loved

Would LOVE to built such a slant...................

Sad as hell. Tooling I can kinda understand, sorta. But doing this with parts just makes no sense at all. They obviously wrote them off...one would think it would've been better to sell them for pennies on the dollar or even give them away to whoever would agree to take them all.

Zoiks! I don't guess anyone knows where this ditch is, or has the means and money to attempt a salvage operation, if such were even possible (how would one dissolve a mountain of concrete without damaging the parts?)

From what (comparatively little) I understand, the slant was available on VG Valiants in Australia, at least on paper, as a cost-reduced fleet/taxi type of option. But yeah, for the most part it looks like no slants after VF in Australia.

The CxC name always cracks me up. Chrysler by Chrysler. Um...yerr...as opposed to what? Chrysler by Ford?

Busy chatting with the new owners of the property - FORD :?

Now Ozymaxwedge why in all creation would i FLAME you - you just don't know it but yer gonna help me source some bits for my CL Regal SE

BTW the vh to CL CM V8 brake boosterbraket allows you to fit the PBR or simmilar booster to a slant six barracuda rhd mine wil be in next weekend

Fitted a whole CM braking system even the rearend works like a bomb

plus we here in the Southern hemisphere has no probs with different control arms etc it just works.

:D :D :D :D

If you are using a CM diff itself into your car, you know it's wider, right ?

Yup I do and I am VERY happy - Running 7inch ROH sportsman from a VH charger with 205 tyres and stil has about 2 inches outside the edge of the tyres had to have the spring perches moved inboard 17mm a side

It place the wheel very well in the arch looks planted now not tippy toe

Good deal...my VG coupe I recently picked up has VH front and rear too..with the steel Charger wheels on it, places the tires a little bit close to the 1/4, but I will be running aftermarket wheels shortly anyways. :P

On my last VF ute, I just used VJ discs, and a Yanky A body '74 diff for the back, gave me the right offset and big pattern.

What is nice is the extra clearance between the drum and the springs with torque thrust or similar I can run op to a 235 with eaze

I took my self off topic but OK

The sadest thing is there is a VH charger here waiting to be turned into a 440 drag car - the hemi six lying in the dirt and the SOB doesnt wanna sell, but cant afford to build

They definitely still had slants available in the VG series.
I wrecked out a VG ute about 5 years ago that was a factory slant (engine option code E20)

Weren't the utes kinda an oddity anyways. I thought the production numbers we're extremely low on them as it was. Allpar.com claims only around 2,000 ute valiant's were made and they all had /6. I thought the utes we're part of the AP6 run, which was pre-VG anyways?

hello,
utes were not THAT rare, although by US standards, not a lot were made.
check out this site,(click the "select" button to access all the models.)
this will answer most of your questions about production numbers and numerous other facts.

The Ute was known a the Rustler over here - a few around but getting rare

the El Camino and Rancheros are a dime a dozen but the Valiant Rustler.....expensive and rare

Utes where lower production numbers then the cars for sure, but still quite a few around. Here is my old VF Ute (with VIP grill) it was number 0427 built (too bad not a chev one  ) It's a 245 Hemi/ 3 speed manual.
I did the paint sort of similar to a VF Pacer, kind of suited it I think !
I sold it and it left California..
