After nearly t-boning a kid who ran a red light and shredded through a left turn right in front of me (in hindsight I should've just done it and put him out of society's misery) today, I'm on the lookout again for a horn loud enough to break glass and wake the dead (ie: the loudest I can get my hands on). I've searched around and seen Dan mention the Bosch Supertones a couple times (which I assume are different from the Hella Supertones?), but can't find any way to get them stateside. I'm also looking around the junk yards at the older American "land yachts" to see what I can get my hands on. What I don't want is a set of air horns (yet).

Any suggestions?

Bosch and Hella both make a much wider range of Supertone horns than you can generally find advertised on the web. The good ones are significantly more costly and much louder than the little $19 "highway blaster" items from the parts store. I have a few sets of the loud Bosch ones and can order more directly from Germany, if you don't find something locally. As with lights, horns really need a lot of power to work correctly. The stock wiring tends to starve them; run good large-gauge wire (12ga is a good idea) via a good relay. Also, horns have to be mounted properly. Trumpet-style horns need protected mounting so they don't scoop up water and get ruined in a hurry, but disk-type horns (like the Supertones) can be mounted facing front for maximum effect.

The air horns that are offered for cars are silly. They aren't any louder than the stock horns — not even that loud, in many cases — and their higher pitch is less effective.

And in the end, if you really want to pull out all the stops and spend a giant whackload of money on insanely loud horns, go to http://www.hornblasters.com , an outfit who sell actual, real train horns and tanks and compressors to operate them in passenger cars. There are demo videos that are funny for the first minute or so until you realise the people in the vids are being childish jerks.

Yeah I wired in a relay a few months ago and was surprised at the difference it made with even the stock horns in my Toyota. The Duster's next up for a horn wiring upgrade (along with everything else being upgraded, sheesh), then both are getting new horns.

I'm going to check a few places locally that I haven't looked yet, and if I can't find anything I'll be sending you a PM for them good Bosch ones...

I have a air tank, with a Caddy air suspension compressor, for use at the track. I also have a Frieghtliner air horn, Hook up a air valve/relay, and an air line to the tank in the bed of my Toyota. Look out idiots, crowding me on interstate on ramps, when I am towing my race car.

If I could easily do one up (I should install an air system anyway in my Toyota for when I take it wheeling), I'd jump on it. Problem is there's just no easy way to conceal the trumpets, and that's what's keeping me from doing it. Might be a little easier in the Duster, but then I'm faced with where to put the air tank and how to plumb the system.

Zoinks, yo.

I ended up going out and pulling a pair off a '67 Galaxy to try. Going to clean 'em up first, but once I've got a good relay wired up I'll give 'em a try. Going to see if I can find a way to mount them right behind the grille facing forward, for maximum effect.

I have always like old Cadillac air horns the best. I have had a 65 Sedean De Ville and a 73 Coupe De Ville and both had excellent horns. I would tyr and score a set of those.
