Hi all, in my 69 Dart (stock, slant six/auto), if I idle for a while I get a whirring noise. Also hear it sometimes at the shift points (a little angrier sounding) under full throttle before the shift. Fluid is sweet & cherry red, no slippage. Thoughts? Thanks! ~Scott in TX

The torque converter could be making noise I suppose. The converter has a pump (which is attached to the converter shell), stator, overrunning clutch and turbine. The clutch holds the stator still (holds against the reaction shaft which is attached to the transmission pump support) when the torque converter is multiplying torque, but then allows the stator to freewheel when the turbine speed gets close to the pump speed. If the clutch isn't holding the stall speed will be low and acceleration will be poor.

The planetary gears can also make noise when in first or second. If they are making noise it will likely be different in each gear and disappear and high. The torque converter noise should happen in every gear.

UPDATE - A year later, still going strong, still shifting perfectly, strong accelleration, no vibration, no leaks, fluid still cherry red.

A few thousand more miles on it. Still getting the noise. No worse. Have searched & read lots on the site but haven't found "my" noise...

If it idles at just the right speed, I get a grrrring moaning growl that goes away if you blip the throttle, then comes back. Sounds like a moving part, whirring, not just a sympathetic vibration. It's loud when it happens. 90% of the time it happens only at idle, warm or cold.

About to pull the great drivetrain out of this beater to put in something else, would like to take care of it then.

More ideas?
