Have any experince with pulling steering colums and dashboards out of dusters i could use some help

Steering Column...

pull plastic bezel under the column... loosen the 3 plate bolts holding the column to the floor... open hood, spray roll pin in coupler box with PB Blaster, using punch of same diameter smack it out with a 3 lb BFH....

pull column nuts, check to see if your column has the 'other' set of bolts on the column bracket (in '74 it was 2 holding the column, in '73 it was 3)...

Tag and unhook all of the wiring, pull the column....



A-body Dash Pull....

First... remove windsheild... (if you aren't ready to do this, skip it and do your dash restore in the car....)... under the winsheild gasket are the bolt heads... unscrew...... remove kick panels... remove the bolts holding the dash by the door jambs...remove all wiring connections... removing the dash cluster makes it easier too... steering column has to be loosened or removed entirely....

well I never knew that i have to remove a winshield but is that the only way to get that thing out because i just wanted to paint it and such

You should be able to mask everything off and paint it in the car. I'll tell you this, removing the windsheild without breaking it is very difficult; even professional installers sometimes break them. That would be the last resort for me unless I needed to replace the windsheild anyway.

Yup. You can remove everything from the dash with out removing the dash its self. You will need to round up a 1/4 inch flexible drive socket holder* to make your life easer removing the dash pad, and some of the plastic trim lining the face of the dash.

* This item looks like a tightly coiled spring/cable extension that snaps onto a hand held screwdriver like socket holder, and the socket fits on the end of the flexible drive extension. This device will enable you to get onto nuts that are in a tight spot, that a normal nut driver can't reach because it is too long.

Don't forget that the steering wheel may need to be dropped down from the dash in order to remove the gage cluster.

If you brake off any plastic screw receivers, etc. there is plastic epoxy made to work on plastic. I have performed this irksome task of painting the dash in place, as well as rebuilding the heater box. That epoxy worked well.

Once the dash is stripped of parts you can wipe it down good with wax remover, and than wet sand it to get a nice smooth surface to paint.

You want the dash pad off don't you?
The only way I have ever achieved this is to pull the windshield. A new w/s is a good idea anyway every couple decades and the last one I bought from my glass supplier was around $130.00.

i cannot imagine someone breaking a windshield upon removal unless they were trying to save the windshield seal. always sacrifice the rubber to save the glass. ALWAYS. I installed a 35 year old windshield in a bus that had had the A-pillars welded after a collision, with a new windshield seal. i did it myself, with a cotter pin hook, and liberal amounts of vegetable oil and patience. do not try to save the old seal, it is not worth it. Lock and load; get out the boxcutter and shred that old mother~

You can get the glass out intact if you cut the rubber seal but sometimes those are harder to find than the glass and almost as expensive. I don't know about the Duster.

You gotta remember that this a fairly well loved model with famous sister cars too (Duster/Demon/Sizzler/Twister/340 Wedge/Duster 360), so glass and seals aren't too much of a problem to get for it.
