All right, I am confused. I have a 65 valiant convertible. I only drive it in fair weather. I have been searching all over the web for answers about headers. I have read that they are not for street cars,or daily drivers. according to pete hagenbuch an engineer for the slant 6, it's the best thing you can do for a street driver.

anybody here ever ran a header that long on a daily driver?

What Pete's describing is simply full dual exhaust. Unless you're going to be doing performance cylinder head work and a cam change I wouldn't bother with headers. I just took my '67 Valiant from 19.4s and slower to about 17.10 with a ported and milled head (now true 8.5:1 CR), Holley 390 on an Offy intake and 2 1/4" exhaust off the stock manifold. It runs great on regular gas too. How fast do you want to go?

I don't need to go fast. I just want a nice running car that will get out of the way when it needs to. to give you an Idea of what I like,is in my brakes. I didn't need it to stop any better,but I did put disc brakes on it.

Like Dan, I also vote for Dutra Duals. These exhaust manifolds will last WAY much longer than any headers you can buy. My slant six is a daily driver, and reliability/low maintenance is a must have for me. I'm not saying that headers will make your slant unreliable, but with Dutra Duals, there are fewer potential issues.
I've had Dutra Duals on my Volare's slant for over 6 years, no complaints.

I met Pete back at Chrysler a few years ago and asked him about this. My wife and I went through the lab with him and the key header length they came up with was 40" for the primaries, like the Hooker header Summit Racing sells. They got quite a performance hit when using them with the 2 barrel BBD. Still set up that way in the lab. Got another 54HP on the dyno with that combo.
The main problem is in the old days headers weren't built as nice as they are today. Hooker has the coated headers which last along time and have much thicker flanges. With a RemFlex gasket you can run these for a long, long time and never have a leak.

The question is can you live with out the carb heat provided by the stock manifold. If you live in a warm climate, then yes. If you live in a cold climate then you need to run water heat under the manifold to help atomize the gas on those cold winter days.

So yes, it is possible and Pete said the upper office was just trying to cut costs. Another thing, it performed as well as the 318 cars and corporate didn't want that....... We bought about $300 worth of books while we were there. What a blast!

At some point in the near future I will make the switch myself. "Argentine Juan" has been twisting my arm to do it.

I am almost done pushing the limits of the 1920 Holley one barrel, next is a two barrel setup on a 4 barrel manifold. Then the Hooker header mod....

Not yet! Been to the track to watch my friends SL6 run in the 14's.
Will get one for fun with a #56 jet then maybe a #61-2 jet and a #64.
The older neighbor hood gang want me to make a 13 second SL6.
A time slip or two is one of the key things I want to do before the one barrel comes off and the two/four barrel setup goes on.

The lighting them up lasts until the little 1920 fuel bowl goes dry, Not that long.... Been in quest of the more mileage lately, but still get itchy now and just go for it.. Been real happy with the electric fan mod in this 95 plus degree heat and the carb heat deflector. Hot starts are immediate after heat soak.

sorry if im getting into this thread later in the piece, but thought i'd add my perspective on headers. i have them on my 67 safari wagon and im 50/50 about them to be honest. the fuel detonation is definitely an issue that presented itself during winter (just had ours here in new zealand) and it would give me grief under excelleration. but to be honest, it was really only cold enough to cause the issue a couple of times, so it didnt make me go and want to change them.

now im still running a pretty much stock 225 as far as im aware (although ive been told by a previous owner it apparently had some engine work, nothing specified, so until i pull it down, who really knows).

mine are an older set of headers that were on it when i purchased the car. theyre getting rusty and have just blown a hole on the underside of one of the headers and arent even worth fixing as they werent really made that well in the first place to be honest.

i would still be keen to stick with headers though to be honest, but a well built set and have them coated for durability. the big change i would do would be to run 2 full length exhausts with a balance pipe and some cherry bomb mufflers. im not really after speed, just a good tone and more airflow. am i on the right track???
