I am thinking about getting a new exhaust to go with my new super six, and I was wondering, what would be a good sound?

I was thinking:
Stock exhaust manifold, 2 1/2" back to a Flowmaster 40 series single inlet dual outlet, then 2 1/4" the rest of the way.

Or

Stock exhaust manifold, 2 1/4" back to a turbo muffler, 2 1/4" the rest of the way.

I found this vid on youtube and I want it to sound similar to that. I want a throaty/deep sound, not the "rice burner" sound you get with a glasspack or open exhaust.

I did hear somthing about a hemi muffler, how good would that be?

Any suggestions?

well if you want it to sound like the video the flow master's will most likely be the ones to put out that sound. maybe not exactly to the point but very similar. glass packs/cherry bombs don't sound all that bad either. anywho have fun with it and post a vid when your done if you can always liked hearing an awesome slant

I dont think the Glasspacks sound anything like rice burners. Heres a good example:

Single exhaust, single glass pack. Basically exactly what I have on my car, but I have a 2.25" exhaust, so mine sounds deeper.... and sets off car alarms.

Tried the glasspack thing....once.....for a month. Tried a Walker turbo for a couple of years untill it oil canned when splashed with water and made a loud BBBBBBBRRRRRRRR until it dried. Went to a Magnaflow and it sounds good for my rather small 2" exhaust.

Maybe not at idle, but goin down the highway... sounds pretty annoying to me to. I might try the turbo I have first, and go from there.

What is a turbo muffler anyway? My grandpa has one, and I have heard people talk about them, but I have never heard one an a car.

well here is my setup on my truck Stock exhaust manifold two inch pipe to the rear end then a Y pipe split into to maga flow 40 series mufflers sounds good and looks like a V8 at the red light. I am looking into replacing the stock manifold as mine has been cracked for a couple of years I have another good stock manifold , but would rather have some form of header. just my two cents.

In general, there are 3 muffler types, straight thru, (glass pack) Turbo, and Reverse Flow.
There are many variations on each type but in general, a turbo muffler has a chamber, with the inlet, off-set from the outlet.



Reverse Flow mufflers also have a chamber but change the direction of the exhaust path in a back to front to back fashion, in order to get more sound cancellation.

They do have a tendency to "drone" but I get the same effect with a single flowmaster as well.

I have to say that I really dig the idea of dual magnaflows, making a slant sound like a V8, and then like a Killer Bee is one of the few little things in life that I really appreciate. The turbo mufflers and flowmasters seem pretty quiet to me when running off a single inlet with a single exhaust system. I myself like the "loud and proud" routine, and yes, I know it is a cop attracter.

I vote for your first option, single inlet Flow40, dual outlet, I think that would sound pretty nice.

They're called "Turbo" mufflers because the original OEM application for the design was on turbocharged Corvairs.

I have a turbo on mine. It sounds pretty deep, but it's not very loud.

I have a flow master on mine and it sounds like a v-8 at idle, that is the only time it sounds like a v-8... At wide open throttle it's a sound like you would not beleive. If you don't like that sound well time to go to a v-8 and be like the other people... too bad really would be nice if you played with the slant...

Yeah, why does everybody want their slant to sound like a V8? Slants have a unique sound all their own.

I don't want it to sound exactly like a V8, but I have a thing for that nice deep rumble at idle, and a loud roar when on the road. My slant already sounds like a stock 273/318 at idle, but you can barely hear it. I want the sound thats in the vid.

Any one heard anything about those new T-Phlo Trinity Mufflers? Seen it in MCG. Just curious.

A decent rumble at idle is the closest you'll ever have (although an experienced ear can STILL tell the difference). A slant (or ANY inline six) with a free-flowing exhaust and a wide open throttle DOES NOT sound anything like a V8 to me. My favorite description has always been this: Ever watch old war movies? When they do cockpit shots — you know how a World War II fighter plane sounds? That's almost EXACTLY how my slant with Dutras, true duals, and Borla mufflers sounds on the highway. If something like that doesn't appeal to you, you're wasting your time IMHO.

Six cylinder engines have a unique sound, just like all other engine configurations do. The number of cylinders determines the sound. You can change the tone slightly, or make it louder or quieter, but that's it. If you want V8 roar, you need a V8.

Haha. We have a dual exhaust 2.25" (with cutouts 'for fun') with flowmaster 40's and when I get the car back to CA I'm looking to downgrade to more of a stock sound. My general plan is to make it a little bit more of a sleeper.
