I'm new here, I've owned several slant 6 powered cars over the years. A '60 valiant , a '66 Plymouth Signet, a '75 Dodge wagon and a '69 Plymouth 2 door. I owned several Mopar minivans. Since then I've retired . I went looking for a small Japanese pickup , but the only one I could find that was clean and in my price range had 375000 miles on it . Thats a long lived truck , but i don;t want to rebuild the thing all that soon!
I finally settled for a '82 Dodge D150 . its in fantastic shape! It was well maintained by ONE owner , a geezer even older than me . he waxed the INSIDE of the bed for the first 18 years!.
This truck is our only 4 wheel transportation, I bought it because I could work on it my self .
My Honda Accord allowed no room for an old guy with very large arthritic hands , with the dodge ,I can use a step ladder to climb into the engine compartment !
I have a question, Auto zone says it has either a 9 inch or 10 inch clutch and theres no way to find out which with out tearing it down. I'd like to change the throwout bearing and clutch disk . The throwout bearing is noisy and I'd like to change the clutch while I'm in there. Clutch action is fine ,very smooth . Kind of like the same old man babied it all those years!!
It has a A 833 4 speed , is there anyway of identifying the size disc with out tearing it apart , I have to order the parts and I don't want to tear in down twice , its our only 4 wheel transportation.

If the bellhousing has the high mount starter (most likely with the A-833OD) then it should have a 10" clutch...(the 9.25" clutch just wouldn't survive hauling loads around)... if the starter is 'low' mount (you have to crawl under the truck to get at it then it's an 11" clutch...

good luck

Thanks for the info, Duster.
One more question , I'm also going to change the input shaft bearing as its noisy. Where can I get the part number , I want to have the bearing in hand , to minimise down time. Thanks, Rick

For the bearing info you first have to ID the trans. Do you have the trans with the shifter bolted to the side of the tail housing or is the shifter part of the trans top cover?

<edit>

Never mind. I didn't reread your first post.

Man, I hope it's just the input bearing... because there are also the roll bearings that that ride around the mainshaft behind the input shaft....

the bearing is a '308' if you have a place that just services bearings (and you don't want to buy a whole overhaul kit), you may want to buy some gasket material and make another input shaft bearing retainer gasket too...

if not familiar with this tranny, make sure to read the article section of this board.

Good Luck,

Rick,

I am unsure if you are contemplating a $195 kit to rebuild and 833, or $195 for a clutch, PP, and TOB. I can give you a great source for the 833 kit at MUCH less, including two new USA 308's. Or, PM me if you want a new 10 inch clutch with PP and TOB for that tranny for less than half that amount.

Hi Rick,

I will send you a PM...I don't often scan threads for msgs, usually like to get PM's and then use email (rock at intrex dot net) for pics. Be glad to give you contacts. Good to see a Frank note too! I liked the pics of the Brents in slant six racing news...Frank I still have some antique outbox mail for you (and others) I found in "outbox". Seems to be one of life's mysteries why some stay in outbox and some go right through. First hurricane did get us though, power off a few days. Not like Fran though that had us out two weeks!
