I have a 1976 slant six 3 speed on the floor Volarie. I bought from a friend of a friend..he gave me a bill of sale and sold the car cheap. He did not have the title, and was'nt feeling like going through the trouble getting one. i told him I pay more and he ha dhad the car for 20 years and just wanted to sell as a parts car. I tryed to sell as parts but no luck. i will not scrap it as it runs good and I enjoy the six witht a 3 speed on the floor. anyone have any thoughts on proper title ..I went to our local DMV and they said I could do a mechnics lien..just wondering if anyone else has been there....thanking in advance.

In Illinois, if you know who the car was last registered to you can get an application for a lost title. You have the previous owner fill it out and sign it over to you. The new title will come back in your name.

Or abandoned car... you put a lien on it for $500... if your buddy doesn't pay the bill or tells them you can keep the car... you get to file for a replacement title... Had to do a similar thing here in Oregon...

Good Luck,

In indiana, there's a series of forms you can fill out to get power of attorney over the title. Although, it involves having the last owner of record sign over title rights and then having that form notarized, which then allows you to file for title. Kinda time consuming, especially the notary part.
