I have a 73 225 slant six that originally was in a Dart I looking at headers and was wondering if this motor had the high starter? I thought the high starter was only on the trucks, but I am not positive Thank you for any info. Jim

All the engines have the same bellhousing pattern, so there is no such thing as "this engine has the high starter and that one has the low starter".

Also, there were plenty of trucks with the high-mount starter location, so it's not "cars got high-mount and trucks got low-mount", either. Whether a given truck had the high or low starter location depends on which transmission the truck was equipped with. A727s and heavy-duty manuals used a V8 bellhousing with a bellhousing adaptor to the slant-6 engine, and those are the ones with the starter in the low (V8) location.

But there was a lockup A727 made with the housing cast with a slant six bell. I got one of these from a forum member and it is a fine tranny for my truck (in combination with a torque convertor from Midwest), and uses the high mount starter. I have learned these trannies are not common and it weighs enough I am not sure anyone would put one in a car rather than using a 904. I also had to cut out a crossmember and create a replacement crossmember to use the 727, where as an 833OD slid right into the truck with only a little notching in the stock crossmember. Also, the 727 and the 833 were so close in total length if not exaclty the same, that the same driveshaft could be used for the 727 as for the 833. I used a Hurst Promatic 2 ratchet shifter but kinda wish I had used a quarter stick.

The Slant 727 came in both lock-up and standard version.

They are way heavy.

There is so much information readily available last week I was using the search and found the source of my oil leak that I had been searching for all summer was the spark plug tubes and then on the parts list I was able to go to NAPA with the part # for the seals that I needed. It is not so much which transmission had the high or low starter positon.

With the manual transmissions, it mattered as to the size of the clutch. The normal 9.25" and 10" clutches had the high starter. The 11" clutch had the low starter. I know that in 1980 the 11" bellhousing was specific to the \6. It was not an adapted V8 housing.

I can't speak to year but I removed a bell housing, flywheel, 11" clutch and pressure plate off a LA 318. As I recall the bellhousing was shaped in a way so as to allow the larger flywheel and clutch assembly. It is unique in that it offers left and right throwout arms.

In fact I still have it.!!! Clutch and pressure plate is like new. gl/6
