Hello All --

Adam here from Chicago, IL - New to the board. I've already posted in the parts-wanted section, and found a hard-to-find part via a member here - thanks for the welcome and help!

I have a 1981 Cordoba, with a Slant Six, of course! http://www.functionbox.org/81Cordoba/ She's stock, and did all of the normal tune-up procedures, but having some trouble getting her to run really well.

The carb is rebuilt, and verified working correctly. The car, however, is running VERY rich. Rich enough to get the cats really hot. I've tracked down the problem to an emissions system issue. There's a TON of gas-vapor coming from the hose that comes from the carbon canister to the carb. I checked the canister to make sure it wasn't full of gas, and it is dry.

Anybody have any advice?

When you catch it running rich, go remove the gas cap. Does the rich running go away? If so, you've got pressure building up in the fuel tank, which is a difficult situation to cause in an application like yours with a mechanical fuel pump. Are you sure the extra fuel vapour is coming in from the charcoal canister? Could it possibly be coming in via the PCV valve and hose? That's a fairly common failure caused by a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm that puts a shot of fuel into the crankcase with every pump stroke. The heat inside the engine vapourises the fuel, which then enters the engine via the PCV and makes the mixture way too rich. Two things to try: Pull the PCV valve out of its grommet on the valve cover and see if the rich running goes away. Pull and smell the dipstick and see if the oil is thin, at a high level, and smells of gasoline. If so, replace the fuel pump.

If you can definitely eliminate the crankcase/PCV as the source of the extra fuel, then first take a look at your fuel filter. Is it the correct 3-nipple type, plumbed correctly? If not, you'll want to correct that. If so, then my first recommendation is to try replacing the gas cap. Do you get a "Whoosh!" when you first remove the gas cap...?
