I have been reading up on turbos & want to do some experimenting. Upon mentioning this to my friend he told me he had one laying in his garage and I was welcome to it. He told me it was from a jet fighter- an f4 maybe- said he thought it was for cockpit air circulation-looks to be made of titanium.
I didn't see any oil or coolant passages.
Anyone familiar with anything like this?

Yeah, I don't think that's really a turbocharger. I think it used engine bleed air to run the turbo compressor.

Looks kinda like the turbine used in the air-to-air air conditioning system. Uses bleed air from the engine to create cooling air for the avionincs/crew compartment. Lots of other components involved and very effective when everything is working properly.

So you think it would hold up attached to an engine?
I had my hopes up but I havent found anything on the web about this thing.
I was told it had been rebuilt years ago there even seems to be traces of what looks like exhaust.
Is the bleed air intake cold?

Well, I am not sure about what the bleed air temp is when it reaches that turbine, but it is somewhere around 1400 or so coming out of the engine. I also have no idea what kind of presure it might produce when it spins up. Might be a fun project. Side note, those components are what fail and cause the air conditioning to stop working in most cases, after about 300-500 hours of opperation.

mike68dart, thanks youve given me the incentive. Do you have any idea about oiling on this, it looks to be self contained I'm thinking that the caps that are safety wired are oil plugs.
Ill open it up to see.
I was told he brought it home after he rebuilt it so if i get 300-500 hours out of it I'll be happy.

What are the turbine housings made of? Aluminum? If both are aluminum then they won't hold up to exhaust gas temps.

I'm about 99% positive its titanium-blades and all. Thats why Im assuming it should work. My only worry is the oiling config. Im going to delve into it tomorrow and see whats going on in there.

It does come out just before the combustion section, it is still VERY hot. The leak detection elements are set to go off if it gets above 850 Deg in a 1 inch area, and these are mounted about 1/2 to 3/4 in from the ducting and routed all along it. Directly out of the engine it is in the neighborhood of 1400 or so.

Yes, the bleed air is indeed taken from the compressor before the combustion cans and runs about 350º to 700º depending on how many compressor sections there are and which section the bleed air is taken from, 1400º to 1600º is the temperature that comes out of the burner cans. The bleed air is then routed to an inter-cooler where a bypass valve typically maintains a constant 300º temp before it is then routed to an A/C pack like the one you have.

As you can see, at those temperatures, there is no need to have any titanium at all in the unit. I don't believe it would stand up to exhaust gas temperatures at all.

The plug you are looking at is probably the oil sump drain
