 Post subject: no fuel
PostPosted: Sat Mar 01, 2003 4:23 pm
I have a '64 225 that will not run under a load. The engine idles, but when I floor it, it tries to stall. I believe I am not getting any fuel. I changed the filter to a clear one and it does not fill up when the motor idles. I changed my fuel pump, as well as a full tune up (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, points and condenser). I think that the pump is not working properly because of a problem inside the motor. Is this possible? I believe those pumps run off the cam. As a side note, I just purchased the car and it has been sitting outside in the Sacramento heat for many years without running or even being started. Any help would be appreciated. :?

As I recall when I had a spectre clear filter on my duster it did not fill up all the way, I don't think they aren't supposed to. Stalling when flooring can be many things. It's not that you aren't getting enough fuel to the carb, but sounds like the carb isn't letting the engine have enough fuel it needs to compensate for the additional air. My guesses are that the carb is out of tune or that there is a vacuum leak somewhere

I did not change the coil. Could that be a problem? Also, I rebuilt the carb. Is there a way to check the fuel pump?

Have you drained and refilled the tank with fresh fuel? Fuel, nowadays does not keep well.

Try a couple of steps richer jet, or start out with a #59 or 60 and see if that helps. Also, check that the "economizer valve" (power valve) is working correctly and engaging the pump lever in the bowl.

I believe there was no fuel in the tank when I started. It probably evaporated. I have put about three gallons in since. Also, I don't know what #59 or 60 means.

you could have a restriction in the pick up tube in the tank. mine did. pull the rubber line off at the tank and blow through into the tank. should bubble freely with no restriction. actually just pull the pick up tube could have a pin hole. if it sat empty for a few years willing to bet there is a build up of rust where the pick up tube has a bend.

is the accelerator pump working? you should get a shot from the pump nozzle when you crack the throttle to cover up the lean condition that is induced. these passages are commonly blocked with varnish. there is also a check ball and pump jet inside the passage that can get stuck and stop fuel from flowing.
you'll need to take the top off the carb to see it. there should also be an aluminum plug that needs to be taken out to remove the jet. crap just loves those little nooks and crannies.

Last time I delt with a car that had sat for years, the carb was shot because the gasoline in it had evaporated. The carb had to be rebuilt - luckily, on a Holley 1920, this is pretty easy. I used a kit from NAPA that even included easy to follow directions.

My bet is that you need a carb rebuild because the accelerator pump is shot.
