How quick does the car need to be to bet these Mustangs and challenge Chargers?

To knock about 2.5 seconds off my Valiant's 1/4 mile ET cost about $1000 including head work, used 390 Holley, used Offy intake, and a new 2 1/4" exhaust system. It runs about 17 flat which will just beat a new Corolla. More cam and compression would help my combo at it's only 8.5:1 and uses the stock 1967 camshaft. I could easily spray 2 more seconds off the ET, but the clutch and light duty 3-speed wouldn't take it. I'd also end up with traction problems.

With your stipulation of no nitrous and beating quick late model cars I'd plan on spending $1000 to get your engine into decent shape and another $2500 give or take on a turbo system.

Well, Josh is right on.
Starting off the books are good, I got all three that Josh metioned my favorite is Turbocharging (the book with the yellow Supra). It was simple and informative, but still required research. The next point is the fact that you need to somewhat interpret what the authors are saying in context. Higher compression is better for the engine, especially in off boost. Not to say that it would be impossible to run 10:1, however, it would be impossible with pump gas and streetablitly. The best bet would be somewhere between 8.5-9:1. I'm assuming you don't have domed or dished pistons, and if you run the 198 rods your compression is going to go through the roof, so, dished pistons will be important. Forged pistons would be awesome, but hypers should will be fine.
Please don't port the heck out of your head I don't know your qualifications for this area. But for a boosted motor simply putting a gasket up to it and increasing flow not size will be great. Increasing boost isn't going to be the answer, but simply making the engine more efficent should be your goal. Please refer to this link and see how the ports are simply cleaned up.

Last, the cam will be important in this build, as well as intake and tuning. The problem is that I've seen lot's of guys talk about doing this, but don't. A v8 is simpler, but a slant is a challenge and a lot of fun. If your an engine guy like me, the challenge is more fun, my 440 sucked the gas.... Check back in with questions, the more questions the more answers and can give you better info.

an engine build is not somethin that you just throw someparts together and expect power you got to do some reaserch ive been reserchin my build for about 9 months now and got a budget set but you also got to think

A: reliabilty if it is a street car

B:fuel econimy gas will go up someday im expectin 30 mpg

C: power to spank mustangs im expectin bout 300 horse without nos and 425 with

important part eny a street build another thing get a verry good and well known machinest for your area

think bout your options befor you make eny expencive mods cause it might not be what you need

Spanking the 'stangs is a challenge as already pointed out. What takes us about $1500.00 in upgrades, they can do for $500.00 and end up with more gains. Simply, they can get used parts for fractions of what we can.
That doesn't mean it can't be done, just don't go racing for titles because you never know

Good luck!!

Expecting 225-250hp and 24-25 MPG with a 5-speed is much more realistic.

I just looked at a Daytona last night that had a 2.4 in it that is making 380ish at the wheels.

The 2.2 he replaced was making 320 at the wheels.

Yep....thats about where I am but less HP (200)

My wifes Talon(200hp) gets 33mpg (her driving) and is as fast as the Valaint.

Ron is the funny man....again.

Look directly into the red light sir....and we will find a pattern........

I feel that Forced Induction Performance Tuning by A. Graham Bell surpasses Corky Bell's book in most all regards. I own the former, Corky Bell's book, Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes and a couple of others. Forced Induction Performance Tuning gives you the whole package, not just the turbo and fuel systems.
I think all 3 of those books are needed.
Read Forced Induction Performance Tuning after you are done with the other 2.
