I'm thinking that you should be able to mount a stock type fuel pump.On the 90 318 there was a block off plate bolted where the pump goes.It's possible MoPar didn't put the excentic piece on the cam gear(it's a off set cup under cam gear bolt) if its there no problem.If not you'd have to remove the whole timing cover/waterpump to install one.If thats the case electric would be the way to go.Good luck 8)

If you cannot use the mechanical pump (actually, even if you can), why not stay with the electric pump in the tank, and use a return flow pressure regulator.
