 Post subject: plugs

I have split fires in my car and have yet to have any probs w/ them. After 1 year there has been no melting of electrodes I have them gapped at 0.40. They were a nice light tan when I checked them 2 weeks ago.

an old racer trick is to clip the ground electrode at the 90 degree bend to make the positive side wide open to the cylinder. of couse you need to get creative here as far as gapping goes and you will need a really hot ignition system to fire them. i've never tried this as it is really for "all out" racers and i hear it's not the most long term spark plug setup.
the spark is looking for the path of least resistance, so why try to split it in two? hell, get an msd box, those things really work! i think a good, fat spark is where it's at. a hot coil, msd type box, and an electronic distributor will work wonders for an old car. splitfires? maybe they help, i doubt they will do much with points/stock ignition.

As James said the spark will always follow the path of least resistance. You will only get one spark with a "Split Fire" each time the ignition fires. I can't see how you can possibly get any performance gain by having two paths. In fact in my opinion performance will degrade because the second ground electrode will tend to shield the spark kernel from the fuel mixture. If you want multiple firings get a Multiple Spark Discharge (MSD) Ignition.

Daniel Stern wrote an interesting post about using an 'unshrouded' plug (long open style electrode) in mopar applications, I don't think he ever followed up on the results in his car, but it would be interesting to see a comparison on stock and non-stock slant.

I've heard both yes and no, and the yes's were all in older trucks/vans with V8s, where torque was wanted. I honestly doubt they'd make much (if any) difference in newer or smaller engines (like our 225s).
