Gentlemen of the leaning inlines.
My name is Terry Bogusz and I raced slant 6's (ARCA- Super Six, Oval Track) from 1975 to 1980 WITHOUT the help or support of Clifford research. I still finished 9th in the Great Lakes area overall.
I have my eye on a '61 2dr (hopefully) Violant HT.
My question is about the drivetrain. I know the rearend of choice is the 8 3/4" mopar.
About the trans? I know that the 727 is VERY bulletproof but we buy into that loosing torque to spin all that weight/strength.
I've seen guys with small block Mopars running the 904. They get a whole weekend off of one as long as they do NOT spray. Is this the direction to go in? I'm starting to see more & more 904 Stall convertors on the market.
My second question is about pistons. I pulled down a '79 225 for a friend for his street A-100 pickup. MAN ARE THOSE SLUGS DEEP IN THE HOLE AT TDC ???????
My oval track motors were based on the '67 to '70 blocks. I did take .125" off the head (ran 3 years with the same one) with NO troubles. I don't recall those engines having "Below the Deck" height so high.
Thanks
Terry

Hey Terry,

Welcome to the site. You are among friends here.

The 225's have always had at least a 0.140" down-the-hole spec, and some had much more (as much as about 0.240" on some). Decking the block or using 198 rods with shorter comp height pistons can get you at or close to zero deck if you want it. The earlier motors seem to be closer to the 0.140" spec than the later ones.

As far as I know, none of the racers use 727s and most use 904s (others are sticks or 'glides). The 904 will handle the freight and is much easier to spin, as you said.

That's very cool you were so successful with the Slant on the ovals. I seem to recognize your name somehow...

The 8.75" axle is very nice, and there are lots of parts for it nowadays.

I'm originally a 'Sconny boy myself (grew up in Madison), so it's good to see another upper Midwesterner around.

Cheers,

Lou

The trick is to grab a V8 998-999 from a mid 70's 318 or 360 car.
Those have a bunch of nice HD parts you can swap into the SL6 904 case.
There is also a "wide ratio" gear set that changes the 2.45 first to a 2.75 reduction. This works pretty good for the drag cars and heavy street cars.

As for the negitive deck, mill the block, mill the head, add stroke to the crank, change the rads and pistons.... anything to get the compression up into the 9's or more. (if you can get good gas to run on) Stock is listed as 8.4 but many Slants check out at about 8 to 1 C/R.

This might be a dumb question, but if the 999 guts are swapped, is it then possible to utilize the lockup TQ features of that trans in the SL6?

Later SL6 904s come in "Lock-up", I have one in my 66 Dart. (a 1980 trans with low first gear and lock-up)

Stock they seem to lock-up a bit early (40 mph) so I change the spring to get it to hit at about 50 mph.
