You would need the oil pickup tube, and what transmission do you have?

The electronic ignition would be a nice upgrade, as would the dual field alternator.

You will need to use the oil pan, oil pickup, and motor mounts from the 63 engine. If you have an automatic transmission, you will need to use the adapter/spacer ring for the crankshaft snout due to the 68 and up crankshaft having a larger bore for the torque converter.

Also the flex plate that goes with the big hub crank.
PM me if you need the adaptor ring and/or a big hub flex plate.

I performed that swap; I put a '83 Dodge pickup engine in a '63 Valiant. A little trouble, but a good swap. Runs like a scalded dog and gets ~25 mpg. One thing though, the truck engine might have a 2-bbl carb in which case you need to change the exhaust to 2-1/4" to adequately accomodate the additional air flow. Also, you might need to change the oil dip stick to the small one used in '63. There is a little plug in the block of the later model engines that you can knock out and install the short dip stick tube. I changed the torque converter to one with the larger nose for the later crank that also fit the '63 transmission. It seems there are converters built now for that very application. Just a thought as an option to the spacer Doug mentioned. I have used both methods and either seems to work well. Good luck on the conversion. Regards. RMDV

No, you don't need to. It's certainly a good upgrade, but nothing bad happens if you don't do it immediately.

That's a custom-built torque converter, not an off-the-shelf piece.

Dan,

Agreed the torque converter is not a "stock" item, but the distributor had six in-stock on the shelf when I had my trans re-built. It seems the demand for that type convertor has made it economical for some jobbers to carry the "converted" convertor, if you will.

Yes the truck engine will run with the stock '63 exhaust, but if it is equiped with a two barrel carb it won't be as efficient. The stock '63 Valiant exhaust is about 1-3/4 to 1-7/8" dia and was designed to accomodate a single brrel carb; at least the two I have are/were that way. If the replacement engine is using a two barrel then the exhaust should be changed to achieve max efficiency due to the increased air flow at higher engine speeds. Regards. RMDV
