I'm building a 1/4 scale 426 Hemi model to display alongside my 1/4 scale slant six. I wanted to detail some of the clear parts with orange paint, but the Dupli Color Hemi Orange engine enamel I bought has metalflake in it. Is this correct for an engine, or were they a non metallic orange? I've never looked that close at a real Hemi and I could just paint it and say whatever, but now I'm curious. Anyone know?

Bummer. That's the paint (Chry Hemi orange) I bought for my 77 slant. I'll have to check now

That's strange.

The hemi-orange paint I got (pretty sure it was duplicolor) wasn't metal flake....

Race Hemi and Street Hemi are 2 different colors. Neither have metal flake.

My 198 is Street Hemi.

This is the stuff I bought, and it's definitely got metal flakes in it. I'll probably use it for something else, it's still nice paint - just not what I was expecting for an engine enamel. I'm thinking now that the correct paint would be Street Hemi Orange.

You can go to any Chysler or Dodge dealer and order the correct color. In the US I think it's $8 a can.
Order these numbers for:

P4349216 "Hemi Orange" '66-'71, '69 - '71 383 & 440 hi-pos, some '69 and all '70 - '71 340s, it's a reddish orange

P4120751 "Race Hemi Orange" '62- '64 413 & 426 Max wedge and '64 - '65 426 race Hemis, it's a bright orange

Also, Dupli-Color has aluminum and cast iron paints. You could paint some things like the cylinder heads in cast iron and then apply the hemi orange paint.

I ended up using Testors Competition Orange. I could find it locally and it's a reasonable shade of orange for an engine, although I don't know if it's close to the Street Hemi Orange. Anyway it's just a model and "Correct" color for any engine seems to be a topic of some debate, even with Mopar's own engine paints. I do have some Dupli Color Cast Coat and several sheens of black that I used to pick out some detail as you suggested. I kind of imposed a deadline for this Sunday (Feb 15) because we're having a Daytona 500 Social and I want to display it along side my slant six along with a short blurb on both famous Mopar engines and their connection to Daytona. I'll post a couple pics when it's done.

Didn't NASCRAP bury all the info on slants because of GM ?

Would not surprise me. I've never seen a lot of photos or information regarding the racing series that the slant six competed in. It was short lived I understand due , to a large degree, to the slant's dominant success. Nascar tends to be sensitive about such things and is always changing the rules to suit it's mood in the interest of "fair" competition. I'm not a huge fan of today's "stock" cars anyway - I much preferred to see the real cars that used to race.

Here is my completed project just in time for Daytona! These engines are huge! :D

I did find some P4349216 "Hemi Orange" at the local Mopar Dealer, but It was too late to use on this model although I considered a last minute respray. I was afraid the Mopar stuff would lift the Testors enamel and I had already assembled some parts, so I guess i'll have it for the next time.
Can't wait to see the look on people's faces when they read about the Hyper Paks at Daytona.

I agree w/ you there, theres nothing "stock" about them anymore, I've lost interest over the years. I haven't watched a race in at least two.

Heres a link w/ some info on the race, they entered 7 cars and all 7 finished and of course, in the top 7 spots....

I love the models by the way, I need to get me one of the slants.

I have an old Moter Trend from 1960 someplace that covers the Compact Daytona race. They raced the Valiant, Falcon and Corvair. I'll have to see where it is and if somebody around here can scan it or I'll make copies and send the artical to somebody who can. Any takers?

Sure would be interesting to get some real facts. I've heard top 7, top 8, top 3. Like to to see some picutres, too.
