Hello, I am partnering in on the restoration of a 70 Dart and could use some advice.

We have a 225 and need a cam recommendation. I was leaning on the small side with the 71 cam. Already have an Offenhauser intake and headers. I want a 318 2 bbl intake and my friend wants a carter 500cfm 4bbl. I think it is too much. We noticed MP no longer has camshafts for sale so we are looking for something with increased torque.

Cam will be backed with a 3.55 gear. We hope to keep the mileage over 20 with a lockup converter. Will negotiate with a slightly higher stall if we can keep the mileage above 20 mpg. We have plenty of gearing options between the two of us so if we have to move up it isn't the end of the world.

Also have at our disposal a 198 slant that we can yard the rods out of if we know what piston to top it off with.

Any info regarding valve sizes and chamber mods to the heads would be appreciated.

For now I will start studying the back pages and hope we can find something a little hotter but still manages to hold the mileage targets.

thx

Sounds like you got some basic knowledge on this stuff. The 198 rods are generally paired with the 2.2L pistons. If you have a whole 198 it may not be a bad idea to build that, they are great performers! Just an idea.
Mileage is going to be a little big more of a challenge, I get 20-23 with an overdrive. I wouldn't expect anything worse than 18-20 so don't be fully disgruntled.
Last for cams I would look at the Erson information on the sticky's for the top of the Engine Section. Last, I wouldn't run a 2 barrell I advise to skip straight to the 4's. The 390cfm would be a much better choice than a 500, most likely similar price.
Last, oversized valves maybe a nice last touch. Wes

Grab those 198 rods...

The Erson cam is a great deal, as well as the enginebuilder over size valves.
Search for "RDP cam" and read-up, I engineered some nice RDP street cams with Erson, one of those would work well with the build you outlined.

Thanks. I'm curious to the rpm range of the RDP cam? I was hoping to find something that starts in before 2000rpm

The Erson 266 / 244 we used in the 9 to 1 compression Twiggy build-up idled well, had great off-idle power and pulled strong to almost 5000 RPM... even with to little carburation. (Carter BBS) I like that grind for a light street car.
For a lower compression engine or a heaver vehicle, the 254 / 244 RDP would be a bettter chice for low speed performance & torque.
