I have the two legged gear puller style of valve spring compressor, not the one that looks like a cross between a bottle capper & "C" clamp. For some reason I can't get the split locks to come free. Or, in other words the stem won't pass up through the retainer. My springs are of the double type.

Any tips would be welcomed.

Put the head chambers down on the work bench. Hit the edge of each valve spring retainer with a hammer. You'll feel and hear them break loose. It may take more than on whack and while you don't have to get all Medieval on 'em don't be too shy either. Once they have broken loose you should be able to remove the retainers and locks easily.

place a plastic spraybomb cap under the valves...1/2 drive socket that just the size to fit on top of retainer ,add extenion ,hit with hammer and they just pop apart.....clean work area cause the keepers might fly

I just lay the head down and use a socket and hammer. If you get good you can pop them apart and catch the locks in the socket. :D
