Excuse the ignorance... but what is a slapstick auto tranny? I have seen cars described this way in adds and was curious.

It was an optional factory sport shifter which worked a little like a ratchet shifter. You could manually bang the upshifts without fear of missing the next gear and possibly hitting neutral by mistake.
