I noticed that you have 2 170 powered cars and I have a fresh 170 in my 60 Valiant and have considered running this motor until I can get a 225 built. What i would like to know is what kind of cam would you put in this motor with a split header and a hyperpac with a 450 vacumm secondary holley.I realized that I have asked these questions here before but they were pertaining to a 225 and I am gonna build a 225 soon but would like to run the 170 considering that it is brand new and i know that chrysler ran the H-P manifolds on them.the only thing that worries about the motor is that only has 15 inchs of vacumm at idle but the valves stillneed the final adjustment and the may not have seated rel good yet(like I said it is brand new) so any help or suggestions would be greatly aprecciated.
Thank you,Mark

Valves don't need seating like rings do. They need to be adjusted to the correct specs right away. If they are too tight, it is possible to burn them. If too loose, you hammer the valve tips. If the engine is stock, the low vacuum, could be caused by:
1, Cam not degreed properly.
2, Timing retarded.
3, Vacuum leak.
4, Restricted exhaust, More likely on a newer car with a catalytic converter.
5. Rings not seated.
6. Carb adjustment.
7. Valve adj.

The problem with a 170 motor is, you can not put a lot of cam in it, easily. The 170 is a "zero" deck motor. Meaning the piston comes up to the top of the block. When the head is milled, the valves get even closer to the pistons. I have a Crane S-264 NC cam in my engine. the spects are: 264* adv dur, 222* at .050, and .434 lift. My head is milled .090, and I have slight marks on my pistons from the valves hitting. With an unmilled head, you can use a little more cam, but I would rather have the compression, of the milled head. The other option is to cut valve reliefs in the pistons. This is what I am doing now, while I am freshening up the engine. I will be going to a bigger cam, when I put it back together.
This is my nitrous motor. My turbo motor, does not have a milled head, and the block has not been cut, so I can run a little more cam. I am getting one from Slantzilla, to see if it works. It is just a little more then the Crane.

Thank you Charlie,
You have answered several questions for me and I didnt know about the zero deck hight on the 170 so that might change my build plans a little.
O nce again ,thank you and all the others on this board for your help and the sharing of your knowledge.
these slants are a little different than my old 340 and 360 motors and all the help and advice is greatly appreciated.
Mark
