I'm trying to determine if my 65 Dart is a 225 or 170. I tried the VIN, but with no success, it just told me it was a slant six.
I'm having a tough time nailing down the engine stamp number. Do you know of any complete listings of engine stamp numbers?

measure the 5/8" water hose running between the top of the water pump and head. If it is about 3 1/4" long you have a 225 ci., if it is around 2 3/4" long you have a 170 ci. engine.

The 170 block is not as tall as a 225 block.

The engine ID number is stamped on a ledge at the top of the block, below the frontmost spark plug, just inboard of the alternator/coil bracket. You may need to scrape or wipe away grease and grime to find the stamping. If your engine is original, the stamping will start with an "A".

The engine block casting number is on the manifold side of the block, near the freeze plugs. Tell us what you find in both locations and they can be decoded.

Can I not get to the EIN without taking something apart?
I'm hoping its a 225.

Also, where can I find date and time stamps on my engine? Wondering when it was built.

It's a 68 thru 75 225. (based on the block's casting number)

Who said anything about taking anything apart to read the stamped numbers? :shrug: Go read the numbers — go ahead and give it a try — and then we'll be able to tell you when your engine was built.

I did read the casting number, but couldn't find the EIN, so I did "go ahead, and give it a try." Doctor Dodge was kind enough to give me a straight answer. Sorry I'm new at this, and that bothers you. I'm just trying to learn as much about my car, and engine as I can.

Let us know what is stamped there. If the deck has been shaved, the numbers may not have been restamped.

I could not read any numbers from the top of the block near the fuel pump & plug #1 on my engine. When I removed the head this winter there were none in that location, they most likely had been removed during a trip to the machine shop.

C'mon, dude, gimme a break. I'm not bothered by your being new, I was mystified by your apparent disregard for a pointer directly to the stamping number that would tell you everything you want to know about when exactly your engine was built. It was an attempt to help you.

My mistake then I guess. Thanks for your help. I just didn't know where the alternator/coil were. I'd still like to post the EIN when I get it.

Ah, okeh, I was assuming you would be able to identify those components on sight. They're at the right front corner of the engine. Find the fan belt and see the frontmost-rightmost component it drives. You'll see the finned, round aluminum housing of the alternator. Rearward of the alternator is the ignition coil, which has two or three small wires and one central large wire connected to it. Also take note that there are six spark plug wires, each of which connects at one end to the distributor cap (where the other end of the coil's large wire also connects), and the other end of each spark plug wire goes to a spark plug. There are six spark plugs in a row, front to back. Start at the alternator and look rearward, start at the frontmost spark plug and look downward, start at the ignition coil and look slightly upward, and you should arrive at the engine stamping number.

You'll want to get these three books as quickly as you can. They're cheap and worth their weight in gold. They'll get you up to speed in an easy hurry on how to identify your car's components, how they work, and how to service them.
