Well , I dropped the pan on my 904 and changed the filter (lots of metal) so either the pump is gone or the TC .
Anyway , I thought I heard there was a way to hook up a GM overdrive to my /6 - with a little bit of help from an A Dapter kit ( johnny cash ) just wanted to know if this is true or should I just re-build this 904 .
Im close to Ann Arbor , Michigan if any has an extra trans .

Either rebuild the 904 or buy one of these brand new ones. Spending any money to have an inferior GM transmission would be unwise, and spending the enormous amount of money, time, and effort it would take to wind up with even a minimally almost-satisfactory result would be sheer folly.

A 4L60 would be sweet, but I'm not aware of anyone making a slant 6 adapter. There are replacement steel bell housings to mate a GM auto to a Chryco V8, there are reworked 4L60s with new cases cast to bolt to a Chryco V8, and there is a company that will cut the aluminum bell off your donor 727, and weld it to an A500, but again, have not seen any of these done for the slant 6.

If you are looking for better mileage, then I suggest getting an '80s lockup 904 trans and rebuild it. For best results, get a little higher stall converter from SMR trans in Canada or similar (rated 3000 for a V8 will give about 2200 on a Slant). I think Midwest Converters now makes lockup converters. These are around $500 so...

I put an A500 in my '68 Dart, but lots of work/cutting and you need an adapter plate from a '67-down A100 van or pickup - hard to find.

H'mm. In what sense do you reckon a higher stall converter will give better results if fuel economy is the goal? Higher stall = more slip at engine RPMs under the stall speed = poorer fuel economy.

2200 rpm is not high stall, just slightly above stock, and at high load. At lower loads that converter will likely work more efficiently than a std stock 904 converter. Lockup is where the better hwy mileage comes from.
