In order to start my car, cold or hot, I have to stand on the accelerator pedal and crank it for a good 5-6 seconds. In order to keep my car from stalling I have to keep my foot on the gas at all times, including stop lights, so I'm braking with my left foot now.

This would seem to indicate a choke problem, but I checked choke operation and it closes when I kick the accelerator and opens slightly upon ignition.

The stalling problem seems to be an issue in the idle circuit? I've just read the carburetion section of Stockel but my grasp of it is iffy Any ideas?

Carburetor problems, vacuum leaks, poor state of tune…what's needed is systematic diagnosis. Carburetor operation and repair manuals (and some training movies) are posted here for free download.

Your carburetor may have been set to the lean side, too small a jet for your altitude, and now you perhaps have a vacuum leak that has pushed things over the edge.

Doubt his jet is too lean for his altitude all the way up there at 6,000 feet above sea level. Too rich, maybe. But I doubt this is a jetting problem. I think it's a plain old carburetor-state-of-repair-and-cleanliness problem, possibly together with other problems as well.
