Hello,

what kind of motor oil should I use ? the new full or semi synthetics is probably not the right ? The additives in these new oils can loose dirt in the motor, the dirt comes in circulation and fills the oil-filter .

what do you use ? synthetic oil ?

thank you
regards
arthur

Use a good brand of engine oil. You can use regular (if the engine leaks or burns oil) or synthetic (if it doesn't leak or burn oil). Select the appropriate viscosity for the condition of the engine and the outside temperature. If the engine is in good condition, 5w40 is a good choice. If it's worn, 10w30. If it's very worn, 15w40. Make sure to use a good-quality filter, and it will also be a good idea to service the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2.

Your 1967 owner's manual should be similar to my 1965 owners manual. I transcribed the oil recommendations from my manual:

1965 Valiant Oil Recommendations

I hope you find it useful. 15W-40 regular/conventional would probably be the lowest-price oil to use.

nasdag,

When I bought my 74 Dart at 155,000 miles I started it on a diet of one quart of synthetic each oil change for the first year, then went up to two for a while. My engine was very dirty. The previous owner had pulled the thermostat and the engine never got very warm, so there was tons of carbon build up. After two years with out causing any damage I went to full synthetic. The filters were pretty heavy at first but the synthetic did a good job cleaning and the engine ran great. I put another 200,000 on it with the synthetic.

I have done this diet to 7 motors so far with excellent results.

Ted,

The engine of the 74' Swinger looks brand new. Has it ever been driven ?

Thanks for the Information. I have only 50000 miles on my 67 valiant and changed now to synthetic motor oil today. Runs smooth.

cheers
arthur

nasdag,

Oh yes, it's been to the strip and run hard plus I have about 60,000 miles on it now since the rebuild. I drive about 130 miles a day. It's been through two pretty rough winters. A little "Simple Green" diluted 50/50 works good to keep it clean every couple of months.

The electric fan doesn't blow dirt all over the engine like a stock fan so it stays pretty clean. In fact, the electric fan doesn't run all that much. The very last picture in the slide show was taken at the track a few weeks ago.

Valvoline 10/30 conventional, change every 3000 miles and use a Wix 51515 filter. 8)

Since my engine is a new rebuild (60,000 on it now) with a little tighter tolerances I am using 0-30W Mobil One and a Wix 1806 filter for no noise on start up and an immediate 50 lbs. oil pressure.
