How did you all install your stereo's without chopping up the dash?

Thanks
Jeff

Build a little console that mounts to the floor or the underside of the dash.

Or, get an Ipod and one of those tiny radio transmitters and use your original radio.

what about hooking the wires up to the old cars (mine is a 62) can the stock radio fuse location be trusted?

I don't see why not. Just make sure the contact and grounds are clean. What you will get should be a switched, fused 12V (+) feed.

i got one of these off ebay http://tinyurl.com/nrv6n7 it has holes for mounting but mine is actually just wedged between the factory knee knocker ac and center console (67 dart gt) looks nice and clean without hacking up the dash. i also ran a heavier gauge wire from the battery to a mini fuse block 94 slot style fuses) i got from rock auto. that has one fused line to each of the radio wires, then one for the fuel pump and an open one as of now, planning on redoing it all eventually. but it works and is fused for now, i have a toggle switch mounted under the dash to control on or off on the radio switched wire and the fuel pump.

Thanks for all the ideas. I looked at a knob type stereo at Crutchfield but they want $279.00 for an am/fm receiver. No cd or mp3. I'm thinking of milling a new face plate out tof aluminum to cover the existing holes in the dash where the stereo is and then mouning the face of a new stereo on it and use a long ribbon cable so that I can mount the actual stereo elsewhere, just not sure where yet.

The '62 and earlier A-Body cars are particularly troublesome becuase of the small, odd-shaped space where the original radio was placed. I'm still looking at options. Secret Audio is one possibility and there's also a stereo with almost infinite adjustment of the knobs and mounting point. I have the info saved on the other computer but it's pricey... $379.00 if I recall correctly.

I all ways thought Secret Audio would be a cool way to go..The Lancer has a 6x9 hole right in the middle of the dash with a nice ribbed cover. Big enough for an 8track and a 45rpm if I situate it right 8)

My audio stuff will sit there and the stock one will stay where it is...

I thought one of the first things people did was to pull out the old stereo and hack up the dash..You folks have rare cars indeed

Try one of these.

Of course, it requires your radio to have FM. I am sure there is something similar for AM only radios.

Of course, you used to be able to buy add-on FM modulators that would turn an AM radio into an FM radio. See here.

and you can buy one here. Here's a cheaper one. And here's a bunch more on eBay.

So plug theiPod FM transmitter into the cd player, ipod, tape player, whatever, plug the FM converter into your original AM radio, then listen to your tunes on your factory original radio. I am sure most of this could be hard wired in and hidden under the dash.

maybe im just too snobby in regards to my audio, but fm quality mp3s dont do it for me, i havent had much luck with transmitters, decent with my itrip for my old ipod, but that drained the battery and still wasnt great...i recommend leaving the original and finding a new spot for a new stereo, either cd player with aux input or just an mp3 receiver. just my three cents since i already suggested something (that may not fit well in your car)
good luck!

I wonder if any one makes a car stereo that dosent have a cd player..something with just a mp3 hook up that can be hardwired to your speakers. seems like it would be very small and easy to hide...maybe even a blue tooth capable devise???

alpine makes mp3 receivers (usb and 1/8th) but those have a little lcd screen (nice ones show your ipod display) but those are standard din size. it would be nice for classic car people, but there probably isnt a broad market for something that would just hang loose or have to be strung up weird. thats my guess. it may exist though...
