My dodge has a column shift A903. I kind of like the column shift so I'd like to keep that format, except it shifts pretty rough. (Very loosy goosy shifts and it often doesn't like to go into first without a fight.)

Was thinking of trying to service/rebuild it, but can't really find parts for the A903. I saw this kit on epay but don't know enough to tell if it is worth using.

epay kit:

The motor is running pretty good right now and I love the /6 and 3 on the tree for the type of driving I do (putting around town, mostly) Don't want to hack her up too much but I also need to be able to shift without having a battle each time. Ideas appreciated.

I am also a fan of 3 on the tree, I have it in my car, and is great for cruising (plus you can have the bench seat)

the rebuild kit looks alright, might even be worth taking the steering column out and see if there is a reason its hard to get into 1st other then the tranny.

If you cant find parts, then buy a whole used tranny A903, then swap and match the best bits of both, giving you a whole good unit.

The 903 just needs to move aside, save the headache and begin your search for an A-230... they are around and give you the benefit of being able to downshift into 1st gear since it's synchro'd, while the A903/A745 are the gotta stop the car or rack the gear into place non-synchro 3 speed.
The A-230 will bolt right into place of your A-903 and it should hook right back up to your column shift linkage(and it might give you the option of having the floor shifter if you wanted to go that route later...).

This is just a better upgrade than trying to part together and bandaid your other box.

I'd offer you my low mileage, very nice shifting A903, but it's in a '67 A-body and would not work directly in your '64 330.

Exactly :D

Good idea about finding another A903 and combining the two. Unfortunately the more research I do, it seems that many slant sixer people are down on them. Bummer.

A direct bolt in that would preserve the column shift? If that's the case, that's good news! Now if I decide to dump the A-903, where would I go about finding an A-230 in good shape?

BTW Is the A-230 the kind of trans that has rebuild parts available in the aftermarket or is it more about finding a complete used trans in a yard?

Now I'm gonna read up on the A-230.

He could do that and probably get himself a nice mid-late 60's C-body driveline and drop the ball and trunion driveline to the slip-yoke style...
(I used to have a couple in the "shed" but I think I have since given them away...)

I did that on a '64 Imperial...but on those they had the 2-peice driveline and the ball and trunion had a U-joint in the front that I knocked out and replaced with a cordoba slip yoke...

Looks like for your Dodge, you'll need to research a later compatible driveline (nice to have easy over the counter parts on that one), and a later tranny...(Josh's or an A-230).

Another problem that might creep up is the later tranny uses a different speedo gear too than the early ones....in which case you may be needing a 1966/67 speedo cable .....
