My new daily driver, 1984 d100 sl6/A904, seems to be sticking in a higher gear when it should be downshifting when approaching a stop or slow turn.

I added a can of Seafoam trans cleaner this morning... still sticks. Perhaps it needs a little more time to work. The pan has recently been down... the PO told me he thought it was shifting into reverse but that's not the case.

When I manually downshift the trans coming to a stop everything is A-OK.

Any trans experts here to chime in? I do have a spare trans of unknown condition.

Sticking governor or badly mis-adjusted throttle position linkage, sticking valve in the valve body.

What happens after you (manually) put it in first then go back to "D" and accelerate from a stop? Are the upshifts normal? Is the 1-2 upshift too early or does it even start from a dead stop in 2nd gear?

Try a fluid and filter change, band adjustment, and adjust the throttle position/kickdown linkage and see if things improve.

Things are improving... I've driven it about 90 miles today and the downshifts only shudder about 1/3 of the time. I think the Seafoam is beginning to work.

The upshifts are fine... it shudders when coming to a stop when the trans should be downshifting into first. The torque convertor lock-up is also working fine.

If I downshift manually when coming to a stop/slow turn everthing is OK.

I guess I should give it a little more time for the trans cleaner to work before I delve into it. Saturday I'll put 300 miles on it on a SL6 recovery mission... I can't turn down a free, running 170/904.

Put 334 miles on it today... still acting up but it seems less frequent.

I'm finally working this week so I can't work on it until the weekend. I'll try adjusting the linkage and do a filter change.. we'll see what happens.
